Damage from Detours

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Sunday, July 22, 2012

As many of you know I finished BLC19 on Tuesday night. The next round doesn't begin until Sept. 12. The last time we had a big break (Dec/Jan) I gained nine pounds and I do NOT want that to happen again.

We went out for lunch today and I ate my usual carefully measured meal. We came home with some BIG projects (weeding, emptying and cleaning the hot tub, sweeping the garage, laundry, etc.) I came in from all this work hot, sweaty and hungry. I fixed my half a sandwich and thought I would "finish off" the stub end of a bag of tortilla chips. This took me to the top of my range for the day. I should have stopped but i ended up eating a 400 calorie snack about 9:30. That took me OVER my range by 400.

I was very unhappy with myself over those 400 calories because I just do not want to repeat last break's mistake. I had made a detour. The damage was done but rather than go to bed in the detour I decided to get up and get on the elliptical and work off those 400 calories. It took 25 minutes at an 11% incline to do that. I'm sweating like mad but I'm pleased that instead of sleeping in the detour (previous blog title) I DID something.

I want to share that one thing that is ESSENTIAL is tracking food. Had I not tracked I might have gone over by a lot more than 400. With tracking (even if you go over) you make better choices in the following days. You "learn" and adjust more quickly.

I'm rehydrating now and making my plan for tomorrow. I'll share it with you.

1) Track EVERYTHING
2) EAT IN RANGE
3) 30 Minutes of Cardio
4) 3 Freggies
5) Read one educational article at SP
6) Encourage 3 people.

That's my plan!

I am so glad that you did the right thing and moved on instead of using this one detour as an excuse to continue down the wrong road. Best of luck on reaching all of your goals.

Oh, YES, tracking food - if honestly done - is the best way on earth to keep intake within limits. Since I began tracking again, I wish I had a nickel for every time I passed up something I might have justified as "but it's healthy", such as a spoon of peanut butter or a little extra whole grain cereal or even rice cakes with hummus. Yes, those would be good choices IF they were within my limit, but unless I'm tracking, they're as "bad" as they can be!

"According to the National Cancer Institute, if current rates stay the same, a woman's chance of developing breast cancer is as follows: from birth to age 39, one out of 228 women; from ages 40 to 59, one out of 24 women; from ages 60 to 79, one out of 14 women; and during her lifetime, one out of 8 women will develop breast cancer."

Thanks for the encouragement and motivation. I often go off track in the evening, and then decide not to write down what I eat and just continue eating. I know I should get out of the kitchen and either go to bed or get involved in something non-food related, but I don't usually. Thanks for reminding me I MUST log EVERYTHING and once I slip I can undo further damage by getting right back on track.

Thanks again.

Excellent advice. I agree that without tracking it is so easy to underestimate what you are eating. I have my best success on this program when I track my food and exercise religiously. Great insight!

Knowledge is power - the power to stop before you go over or to stop before digging your hole any deeper. Stick with what you're doing and I know you'll do great. emoticon

Two questions:
What is BLC19?
What is a freggie?

Inquiring minds want to know!
