New dog update

Saturday, July 21, 2012

So far, so very, very good.

Penny (that's the dogs name) is a very laid-back, chilled out older dog. She hasn't barked once, or run around like a lunatic. She rides really great in the car. She sat on or laid on my lap. We even took her to the in-laws, who have two dogs. She didn't even flinch when they were barking at her or lunging at her. She just turned and walked away. When we finally got her home and let her loose in our HUGE backyard, she ran and ran and ran and sniffed and sniffed and sniffed. Then she rolled around on her back in a few places. Then ran some more.

I showed her where her food and water are. She ate and drank.

Then she came and sat with us on the sofa for a little.

Right now she is laying and sleeping on the blanket we put for her on the floor in front of the fireplace.

Note to self: get a dog bed. I think she would really like it.

She did "growl" at me once, it was when I was kind of hugging her. I don't think she likes that type of closeness. Which is totally cool. I can respect that. She likes to lay on my lap and stuff, so what if she doesn't want me "hugging" her. I can see how that physical boundary of hers could cause a problem for an autistic 3yo that wants to climb all over her.

I want to cry when I think about what she's been through. I didn't realize that my friends have only had her since April. They rescued her from the "Last Chance" animal rescue, who rescued her from being euthanized at another shelter.

She's just a sweet older dog who just needs a quiet place to call home.

I have a special place in my heart for people who save animals. My two dogs were strays who showed up two years apart -- collars but no tags, no microchips, no response to signs and newspaper ads -- and knowing many people don't want large dogs (Baby is a Boxer and Thumper is a Shepherd mix) I took them in. Now they are best buddies and a source of positive emotion for me. And, they no longer need fear where to sleep, or eat, or being scared on their on. Just as Penny probably feels. Thanks for caring. -- Lou

Maybe it hurts her to be hugged...arthritus and all....sounds like you will be a good mom to her in her "retirement"
