Coastal Tour Failure

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Hi,
I'm back home having failed to complete my coastal tour. After a difficult start due to Illness I then encountered some horrendous weather. Gale force winds and heavy rain on a daily basis delayed my progress.

However I intended to ride out the bad weather and do as much as I could, but I injured my right hand. I'm not sure how. I woke up one morning with my hand completely numb. I assumed I had just slept on it and that it would be ok once I got the circulation going. It didn't improve.

I had difficulty controlling the bike as effectively I was steering with one hand, I was unable to operate my front brake or change gear.

Regretably I had to make a decision to return home by train, but the tour wasn't waisted time. I saw some great scenery, castles, met a lot of nice people and lost a lot of weight cycling up many long steep hills.

My right hand is slowly improving but I may need some surgery. I have damaged nerves.

I have already decided to start this coastal tour again next year.

Any trip that you can safely walk away from (and get back on the bike soon) is a good trip. Mother Nature can disrupt our best intentions.

Not a failure, just a dream delayed. Get better then start planning for the next attempt. Life is too short to wait around too long.

You will achieve your goal, I have no doubt. emoticon emoticon

Wow, what an adventure! I'm glad that you made it back safely, and that the tour wasn't a total loss. Maybe you should buy thicker cycling gloves and wrap the handlebars with cork tape. That might cushion your ulnar nerves (if that's what is damaged). Hope you recover soon!

My 1,000 Island trip got derailed a few weeks ago also. Hang in there and keep 'em turning!
