I've gone off cherries

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I've been bowling along, Sparkwise, for a couple of weeks now and feeling very smug about it. Smugness goes before a fall, of course. The Ancient Greeks called it 'hubris' meaning that if you're so pleased with yourself you have your nose in the air, you won't notice the dog do on the pavement in front of you. Until it's too late.

And so it turned out for me.

Today was weird from the start, because I had a text from my boss at 7.40am, while I was getting dressed, and not really in a position to answer texts from the boss. Anyway, I galloped in to work - and forgot to have breakfast. I was busy all morning and didn't get time to stop and buy something, let alone eat it.

Big mistake: massive.

I ended up with a horrible low calorie egg sandwich for lunch, and two cartons of cherries. Also a large bag of giant pretzels.

So JUST GUESS what happened?

No prizes, huh? Firstly one cherry led to another and I ate a whole pound of them. More seriously, I ate about 50g of pretzels. Then I ate an almond croissant, donated by a colleague. Then I ate a stem ginger biscuit. Then I ate two chocolate biscuits. Then I ate some jelly sweets.

The moral of this is: no matter what you are doing, don't miss your breakfast and don't let your blood sugar dip, because once you start eating, you will not stop for a long long time. I didn't.

In fact, I ate on and off all afternoon and the embarrassing thing is everyone I work with saw me doing it.

Argh Argh Argh.

The only good thing is, after a restrained dinner this evening, I actually didn't go that much over my calorie allowance for the day.

The bad thing is, most of it was junk, except the cherries. It will be a long time before I can look a cherry in the face again, mind. Which is a pity because there's another pound of the blighters sitting in the fridge at work waiting for me. Grinning away.

Here's some strawberries instead.

I tend to lose it with cherries, too, but I also feel that the season's so brief, and fresh cherries are such a treat, that it would be almost ungrateful NOT to enjoy them liberally through the summer. emoticon

Do not beat yourself up over this.

It is hard to resist fresh cherries and berries when they are in high season. Thank goodness they are good for us. Eating a package of cherries is certainly better than most items found in vending machines and the sweet treats found at coffee shops. emoticon emoticon

I also indulge in an almond croisant once in a while.

By the way, I keep Mrs Dash and Tabasco packets to liven up a boring egg.
