Ghost teams....

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

When I found Spark People in 2009 I joined the team of "class of september 13-19 2009" that had a very good leader and some of the members did really great! But slowly the activity got less and less and nowadays it is mostly me entering the rooms and yelling "hello?"... no answers really but I can see from the feed that there are - for the moment - three other members that write blogs.

We are 11276 members in that team! What happened to the other 11275? I have one that pops up now and then and check in for a month or so and then disappear, another dear sparker announced a divorce and then got quiet... it makes me wonder how many ghost teams that are out there where nothing really happens.

And why do I visit that team almost every day, I am surely not visiting all my teams that often?

Because there is a challenge there "light our team" where you subtract your exercise minutes from 100 000 and when I joined june 2011 we were down to around 50 000... since then I have dutifully registred all my minutes, I have been mostly alone and today he sum is down to 38 250... It says "Inactive leader" on that team but as I am aleady the leader of three teams I donīt want to step up. The team I am the leader of is not very active, I visit them every day, check in and huddle and that it is kind of slow is due to very few members...

Then I belong to a couple of teams that I visit very seldom - now and then I go threw and leave teams that I Donīt contribute too ... and sometimes I join teams just because some spark friend I like are leaders there...

Still - spark people has so many members and obviously thousands of them are active every day. Still I wonder what happens to the ghost teams...

The ghost teams seem to eventually die out. I took over the Music Maker's team because it had an inactive leader notification and was going to go under. I haven't been a very good leader the last couple of months, though. emoticon

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with both life and leading a Spark team.

I joined in 2010 and I was shocked and dismayed to see enthusiasm in a team and then, little by little, everyone, including the LEADERS are gone! Some leaders are like butterflies, seeming to NEED the glory of starting a new team. But once the pollen is gone, they're off to start a new team. They DON'T REALLY GRASP THE TEAM CONCEPT. Team means that "we're in this together". Some people also add "for the long haul", while others are thinking "until I get the itch to start a new team".

Ok, so I'm learning what this is about. I guess it's human nature . . the not-so-wonderful part of human nature.

My rule is: if I don't participate, get out of the team. If I do chose a team, then at least huddle. How hard is that?

I think it's like weight loss. Some people are in it for the long haul and others start and don't finish. I actually lead a ghost team now. We've been trying to get people involved but nothing catches on. Many of our members are inactive on SP.

I FIND THE SAME PROBLEM. I JOINED IN MAY OF 09; OUR 'HOME' TEAM- NO ONE EVER POSTS. I CHECK IN FROM TIME TO TIME TO FIND I'M THE LAST ONE THAT POSTED, SO WHY WASTE TIME. ALSO, I'LL START LOOKING FOR A NEW TEAM; FIND ONE, JOIN, ONLY TO FIND OUT IT'S AN INACTIVE TEAM, SO I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T BELONG TO MANY TEAMS NOW. MAYBE 5, AND ALL OF THEM AREN'T BUSY.
I DO LIKE THIS TEAM AND I HAVE ONE OTHER FAVORITE TEAM; BUT SOON ENOUGH, THEY WILL BE INACTIVE, TOO, AND WE'LL KEEP MOVING ON.

I agree with all of the above. I am on 7 teams. That means time, lots of time to post and follow. I know I cannot keep doing it as I spend at least 2 hours a day on SP also. I think time just becomes a factor and wins. Plus, maybe the purpose for the teams waned and people just move on. No real answer for you. Sorry you are disappointed.

I cut way back on teams a while ago and only kept the ones that are truly meaningful to me...but I am still not active on them. I think it's because I've cut way back on the time I spend on the sparkpeople website. In the beginning I would spend at least two hours a day on here (usually more), logging on 4-5 times a day. I don't think my weight loss was any better back then, not after the first few weeks, which is normal for me. Now I only read the blogs of the few people I subscribe to, read my emails from spark, read some articles, track some of my food, log on for a few points. I found some really good friends on those teams, I think that's the best thing about the teams for me, but many of those people have left spark, and I really miss them. I think I miss them as much as I'd miss my "real" friends if they had died. I think I don't even want to make any more friends on here, I do not have the time to devote to any more. I think we learn to start living our lives after being on sparkpeople a while, at least that's what I'm hoping happens. It is what's beginning to happen to me.

Yes, I think this a comment on a reality, people will join and then fade away.....

I wonder if Sparkpeople monitors these teams and decides whether to keep them active? It would be a good cleanup for their servers.

That being said, I spend more time on my friend feed than on message boards. I sometimes join a team to be able to follow its goals (like At Goal and Maintaining) but am not active on the boards.

I have to agree with your post on the teams. I first joined about 18months ago and one of the teams I joined was very active and we had 'virtual' walking sessions and regular posts etc.

Now I'm back on the site regularly and it seems to be very very quiet. I've posted on several teams and so far have had little response.

So I'm with you on this one
