I took part in a study of masters athletes and cognitive ability today. The study hopes to show that athletes maintain their cognitive abilities better than couch potatoes.
Part of the study includes measuring body fat by calipers (SparkPeople Trivia buffs know this is a very accurate method) and a VO2 Sub-max treadmill test. Sub-max means you go to 85% of your maximum effort.
I'm not sure how I did on the memory tests but they did say that my reflexes were much quicker than expected. My body fat is a bit over 20% which is not great but better than I expected. Puts me in the 75th percentile of my age group. The best part of the testing was being told that I had the best VO2 score they have seen so far. I thought I was in very good shape. Their computer says I am in excellent shape! Not bad considering how hard I work out on weekends, making Monday normally a needed (and deserved) rest day.
When I get on the scale tomorrow morning, I'm gonna remember that muscle weighs more than fat and give myself a break.
