I just ran my first official (timed w/ chip) 5K!!

Saturday, July 14, 2012

Part of the Wabash Riverfest that I have NEVER done before today was the early-morning 5K. But this year, I took the plunge and signed up for it!

I was nervous. I still have to walk part of the trail when I run, especially up hills, and I worried that I would be the very last person to cross the finish line, and that I would be the only one walking.

For anyone who's ever run a 5K before, you probably know how silly I feel now! I wasn't the first, but I wasn't the last by far! And most of the other people were walking for parts of it too, or even walking the whole thing! So I fit right in!!

Here are my times:

Mile 1: 12 minutes 16 seconds
Mile 2: 27 minutes 19 seconds
Finish Line: 35 minutes 53 seconds!!

One of my goals is to be able to run a 5K in 30 minutes (eventually) -- I had thought it would take me at least 45 minutes to finish! Especially in 80+ degree heat. Mile 1 and the last 3/4 mile were pretty flat, so I did really well on those sections...the rest of the trail was pretty hilly, so I walked more. I imagine I would have faded a little no matter what I did, but I looked at my times and the first thing I thought was "If I had been on a flat trail I probably could have finished in a half an hour flat!"

Woo hoo! First official 5K DONE!!

Awesome job! That is so great, there's nothing wrong with walking when you need to. Whenever I have to walk during a run or I start to feel discouraged at all, I imagine myself lying on the couch with a bag of chips...the reality of myself being out moving and making my heart pump gets me so excited compared to a lazy image of myself wasting time. Always be proud of running at any pace, it's 1,000 x better than never running a step in the first place. You're going to be breaking 30 in no time!
