Peanut Butter - Stir and Refrigerate

Peanut butter is so good for you, it has fiber, healthy fats, protein and it tastes good! Plus it is nutritious, with vitamins/minerals including potassium, magnesium, vitamins E, B6.

One study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that consuming 1 ounce of nuts or peanut butter at least 5 days a week lowered the risk of developing diabetes by almost 30%. Plus it is also a heart healthy food, containing monounsaturated fat.

BUT ALL PEANUT BUTTERS ARE NOT ALIKE!

It is extremely important to read the label on peanut butter. Buy peanut butter that only contains peanuts and salt. Buy only REAL peanut butter and leave the impostors on the shelf.

Manufactures put all sorts of things in peanut butter that you don't need, like adding sugar, hydrogenated oil and other chemicals. Sugar and other added oils actually mask the flavor of peanut butter. They do this to stabilize it for improved shelf life, and it hurts the nutritional value and the flavor.

If you think it is better to buy reduced-fat peanut butter, well it is worse for you. The calories are the same or higher, due to the extra added ingredients like sugar, oil and trans fats.

If you need to watch your sodium, watch the sodium, counts can range from 40 mg to 250 mg per 2-tablespoon serving. Keep in mind that higher sodium content tends to mask the peanut flavor.

So, what is stopping you from buying the healthy type of peanut butter? I have found the reason is that most people have either not tried it, or they don't like it because it separates because they are not following the "Stir and Refrigerate" instructions on the jar.

Let me explain the "Stir and Refrigerate". Natural peanut butter can be stored at room temperature before it is opened. The peanut oil can separate while being stored at room temperature. What you need to do when you first open it, is to stir up the room temperature peanut butter and then put it in the refrigerator. Then just store it in the refrigerator, it will never separate again. Also it will always be spreadable, it never hardens. Plus it will stay fresher in the refrigerator.

If you have not tried real peanut butter, give it a try, it is worth it!

    I was avoiding pb for a long time due to the high calories, but have started buying the real stuff again. I just limit my consumption. I love adding some to my oatmeal! I have been stirring it good & storing it in the fridge. You're right! It's yummy & good for you! emoticon

  I bought real PB a few times. I didn't refrigerate it and it separated. I was always afraid of it going rancid. I never knew you could keep it in the fridge. I just assumed it would be too hard to spread.

I will have to try it again. Thanks for sharing.

    Also, if you store it upside down, after that first stirring, it won't separate again. I don't refrigerate mine, tho.
