A very sincere question????

emoticon If this is not the best place for this blog, would someone please let me know who the right parties are that might consider a "fix" for the Nutritional Tracker?

I am sure that I am NOT the only person using SP who "owns" the "pleasures" (not) of High Blood Pressure. In my travels throughout SP, I have become a busy reader of the many, many wonderful recipes. In the brief couple of months I have been enjoying these travels, I have attempted several recipes and found most to be delicious.

Now, I only cook for one...but my freezer has become full of soups, baked beans, delicious salmon and other seafood, and meats, chicken and beef... Yes, I'm eating good and finally able to figure out the right nutrition for me daily.

It's terrific to be able to read the ingredients and calculate the values of them before deciding which recipes are "good" for me, or can be "adjusted" to be within acceptable limits of salt.

BUT, WHY ARE WE CALCULATING SUGARS, VITAMINS and MINERALS and then ADDING SO MUCH SALT TO OUR BODIES?? No one who has HBP purposely engages in a salt gorging, but this should be something that we are more aware. Could be made part of the itemized foods? Is there some way that Salt can be added to our Nutrition lists? emoticon

Is it just me, but is it hard getting sodium intake low enough to be within recommended range? Since I started Spark People back in April, I have stopped adding salt to my food, I have stopped using it in cooking, have almost completely stopped using canned foods, and don't eat out.

Thank you everyone....it's not quite what I meant, but it works...I wanted it to come up when I enter each item as I eat them...but the other way works, so I guess we can leave it at that....I appreciate everyone's help...what a wonderful thing SP is!! emoticon

Okay, so did you figure out how to add sodium to your tracker?

I've added sodium, iron, calcium, fiber - there are a ton of things you can add.

If you need step by step instructions, just let me know.

I'll join you in wishing "they" would add sodium content to the recipes.

It does track it for you Elaine. One way to decrease your sodium intake is to eat foods that are fresh, not processed....using fresh or dried herbs really helps you to reduce the amount of salt you use on foods to bring out the taste. I often use lemon or lime juice, that seems to work better for me...

There's a button near the report button on the tracker where you can change your goals and ask it to track salt.

well it does track sodium when you run the report. I am salt sensitive so ususally do not add any salt when cooking anything or very little... so I'm not sure what the value is of tracking the salt, the only "benefit" is we need sodium.... but it occurs naturally in most foods .... so I'm confused. emoticon emoticon
