Looking Beyond The Scale

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

When you first begin taking steps toward a healthier you, it's easy to think that the only thing that matters is the number on the scale. After all, that message is reinforced everywhere you turn. Spark has the tracker to see how much weight you've lost, Weight Watchers sets 10% goals, and in every form of media - no shortage of advertisements offering ways to lose the excess pounds, shed the unwanted weight, win the battle against the scale.

It's all bullsh!t.

Look, the scale is a great indicator of progress, but it is simply that - ONE indicator. A SINGLE data point in a sea of potential progress markers. Why did you start this "journey"? Was it just to lose some arbitrary amount of weight with a total disregard to your overall health? If so, cut off an arm and cauterize the wound.

No, I suspect that you are taking steps toward a healthier you, a stronger you, a more confident you. And that, my friends, is NEVER going to be reported by the scale.

Here's the truth - you're not going to lose weight all the time. You'll "plateau". You'll "gain muscle". You'll retain water. You'll retain beer. If you're a woman, you'll have to deal with that "TOM weight gain". Some weeks, life just gets in the way. And that's...OK.

If you pay attention only to ONE indicator of success, you set yourself up for failure. Instead, look beyond the scale.

- Maybe the scale reports a gain, but you've just fit into that smaller size.

- You didn't lose a pound this week, but your coworker says "Hey, lookin' good, have you lost some weight?" - instead of fixating on the "weight" aspect of this compliment, focus on the fact that other people are noticing the results of your efforts, even if the scale did not.

- The scale says you gained a pound, but you lifted more, ran faster, did a pushup, walked farther than you ever have, etc.

It's been a long "journey" for me, and I'm still learning. Every day. I do weigh-in and keep track of it, but I don't obsess over that number. In fact, I probably remember the non-scale-victories more than the numbers.

Some of my favorites include:

- Getting to the last notch on my belt and having to drill a few extra holes. Did this years ago, then gained a bit back. Recently I've been thinking about putting in a few MORE holes.

- Chasing the kids around the yard and realizing that they'll tire before I do.

- Donating 20+ LBS of CLOTHING this past weekend that no longer fits. Swimming in size 36's that used to be snug.

- Completing my first 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon, ultra-marathon, etc, etc, etc.

- Getting a smile from random people while I'm out because they can sense my increased confidence and overall happiness.

- When wife told me - "Hey, you no longer stop breathing at night. I'm not afraid you'll just die while we sleep."

- Being able to do 50 push-ups at a time

- Being able to more than ONE pull-up

...

And the list goes on and on. Bottom line - don't put too much weight on the scale. You may not like what you see.

So when you see no change on the scale, or that number creeps up a bit, don't give up. Think about how the changes you've made have positively affected your life and the lives of people around you.

What NSV's (non-scale victories) do you celebrate?

    AMAZING NSV's!!!!!

definitely NSVs are more meaningful, memorable powerful than a stupid number on a scale.
My preferred number is miles and the # of races I finish!! the number size of clothing- sometimes- but that too is very unreliable and variable.

Thank you for sharing this blog post. It serves as a great reminder to celebrate every small victory on the road to better health. Some of my favorite non-scale victories:
* Increasing my mileage and setting new running goals
* Having a great lift at the gym
* Feeling confident in social situations
* Getting better quality sleep
* Social interaction from running groups and group classes at the gym

Such a GREAT blog!!! It's important to realize that sometimes life happens and you're not perfect. I forget that sometimes and end up being hard on myself so that's just what I needed to read right now.

I agree the scale is just one tool and not the best. It is more of how you feel and look at your progress. Yes try other things to validate what you are doing. Most of all just keep working at getting healthier, the others will follow.
Great job and thank you

Thank you for inspiring me! Yes, non scale victories are very important. The will power that has grown (-: the changing of my taste that I don't even want that cake anymore. clothing fitting differently, and my ultra skinny friend who hadn't seen me in a month saying wow, you look fabulous!

Loving your post- It seems the same for me- not lost a pound in 3 months, but I have to admit that clothes that did not fit before now do and it is a constant struggle to keep it up besides the fact that the scale says you are doing otherwise. I am really proud of what you have accomplished and here is to you and your family----- Keep it up on setting an example in motivating everyone in your family and in Spark People!!!! emoticon

Thanks for this blog. You have inspired ME to keep going and to get my husband involved in SparkPeiple, too..

I first noticed little things like finding my collar bones again. And then one day my husband told me I don't "waddle" any more. I'm seriously working on losing my "square butt". I find I can walk longer and easier without being winded.

Yup, I keep looking for those non scale victories when I am sooo close to my goal weight and the scale is getting slow to move. But now I have ran several 5Ks with my husband, improved our relationship and even went on a hike for about 2 hours UPHILL and 1 hour downhill yesterday. That is something I could have not accomplished at 200lbs +! I am running every other day and boxing class 3 times a week. It feels good to have this kind of energy and confidence!

I got this email a few days back but I always love to read these so I saved it. Yesterday was my birthday and my goal was to lose 35 pounds by my 35th birthday. I did it and actually lost 36 pounds. When I read your post it made me feel so much better because my scale and I have a interesting relationship. It was so good to hear someone else say that there are more important things in this journey then the number on the scale. One of my happiest moments, was when my 11 year old son hugged me and with all the surprise on his face said mom I can I can close my hands around you now!! So yes, it is the small things:)

It seems the easier tool--observable at least to us--is the scale. It's too hard to see ourselves as we are--a skill not usually very well developed. My scale and I are on pretty good terms right now, but I can remember when it was a love/hate relationship--where it quickly became an excuse for a binge.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the reminder. NSV are very, very important. My weight has gone up and down but I hold on to the following to show progress:

* I swim in pants that used to give me a camel toe
* I can wear the extra large jacket at Costco and can zip it up.
* I can work out for one hour on the treadmill (it used to be 20 min)
* My husband farted and I was actually able to outrun him. He couldn't keep up.
* I bent down to explain something to a student while testing them and bent down and came back up with ease.

Small victories but each important.

Timely indeed. LOL. I jumped on the scale this morning horrified to see I was up 2 lbs. Ugh! But really I just opened a bucket of smaller clothes the other day that I had put away because I didn't want to get rid of them, and lo and behold they all fit. In fact, a few items are now too large for me and are going in the Sally Ann bag. It's true that the scale is a fickle thing and really needs to be disregarded now and then. It is important I feel to weigh consistently every week or two so things don't get away on you but the daily reading is just too discouraging. Thanks for a great reminder to look at the non-scale victories. They are no less important than the scale ones. emoticon
