Emily, unless you are eating that breakfast several hours before your run, it is not fueling the run. It keeps your stomach from growling and thus makes you more comfortable, but food sitting in your stomach cannot be used by the working muscles.

What fuels your run is what you ate last night. How long that lasts depends on how good your body is in storing glycogen in your muscles (this is what really fuels a run). One of the things you do with the longer and longer runs is teach your body to store more glycogen (why would it bother to build up the infrastructure to fuel any more than it needs to. Up til now, that has been around 13 miles).

Even the best adapted body can't store enough glycogen to last 26 miles, which is why you need to eat something that doesn't need much digestion (like gu's or candy) to get sugar into your blood stream to your muscles. Yes, you can wait until your muscle glycogen is very low before refueling -- that's called hitting the wall.

One other adaptation that endurance runners need is to train the body to become more efficient with using stored fat rather than muscle glycogen to fuel a run. The body does this best when the run is slow (totally aerobic). It takes a while for the body to switch to "fat-burning" mode, usually an hour or so of slow running. Slow is good when it comes to adapting your body for the marathon. And it is about adaptation. It takes time. Don't rush to judgment from any single run.

And use those cut back weeks as they are intended. To let your body recover so that it can get the most out of the next long run. Don't use them to "prove" things to yourself (either positive or negative).

My but I'm bossy.

Don't think so much....it is dangerous, just do.

I know I have to think about tracking food - but when I run - I constantly tell myself that the last mile or my hardest mile is what will get me to reach my goal - the miles that have come before are just the fluff.
