I've been off work since July 4th. That day was busy - my church does a picnic and I was one of the ones working, then I went by some friends' house for celebration and fireworks after. Since the 4th...it's been a major clean-up/declutter project culminating with a visit from Molly Maids (thanks to my MIL for the gift certificate!).
I've thrown out/shredded a ton of stuff, ID'd some things for a yard sale or craigslist, organized some stuff...but there is a LOT left to do. I've been in this house for 17 years. There's a lot of Bob's stuff - magazines & books - to go through. Mother's Day, birthday, and Christmas gifts...doodads and knick-knacks from the kids, school artwork and projects, STUFF of every description. Also doesn't help that I'm a pack-rat, tree-hugger, reduce-reuse-recycle kind of chick.
The appointed hour arrived, and Molly Maids were here. I had them attack the floors and bathrooms - two of my most dreaded activities. Good news - looks great. Better news - I have gift certificate balance left...YAY!
I was sitting around basking in the glow and surveying all that was left to do when my eye hit...the tub. I knew some of what was in there. Sympathy cards & get well cards from when Bob was sick and eventually passed. Whatever else was in there - I wasn't sure. I dragged it out and started going through it.
I had considered scanning the cards onto the computer, but decided that would be WAY too much work. So I decided to get rid of most of them. Started going through, reading each one, saving some that had special meaning or contained some contact info. Cried a lot, but it was ok. Got the tub down to a handful of items, which I will file away later. Found some stuff that I'd lost. Shredded or tossed a bunch of stuff.
One of these days I'm going to get there. One spot at a time, one project at a time. Got my bathrooms (mostly) re-done over the winter. My friend came and helped me with some painting - lots more of that to do. Need to re-do floors and do a major kitchen overhaul. There is woodwork and trim in the house that needs attention. The garage/basement area...uhm...yeah. Pruning, weeding, and mulching needs to go on outside. The list goes on and on.
One thing at a time. One day at a time. More vacation time to be taken to do some stuff - hopefully when it's not smokin' hot. My friend is planning a return trip...more painting? Maybe.
Made it through today, hard as it was. I'll make it through tomorrow, and the next day too.
