Well I have always known that exercise is the only thing that revs up my metabolism enough to let me lose weight. I have lost weight a few times in my life. Each time I do that it gets harder, than the time before. The weight takes longer to come off, and I lose ridiculously small amounts. I am talking 0.2 pounds every week or two. . I recently read a study that shows after you lose weight, you still need to keep your calories down and exercise up in order to maintain, since your body is trying to keep your previous weight. That was news to me, but it makes sense; since every time I have lost before and then went back to the number of calories I needed to maintain, the weight crept back on. I also discovered that if I eat more ???!!! I lose. I think previously I was in starvation mode, and my body just slowed down so much that it held on to every calorie that I consumed.
I have been consistently going on the Sparkpeople site now for about 8 months. Prior to that I was using sparkpeople less consistently and was not able to exercise due to a few health issues that prevented me from exercising consistently.
I have learned a lot about exercise and healthy eating. I am now varying my exercise and consistently making good food choices; and I am now losing. Last year I thought I was doing everything right but I lost a little and then maintained my weight.
It is varying exercise that works for me, and making healthy eating choices. I eat when I am hungry, but am trying to wait 20 minutes when I get the urge to eat and I know that I am not hungry just stressed.
I don't do the same exercises every day any more. I have added Zumba, Pilates, some yoga, weights and walking to my previous exercise. I am much more toned and in better shape than I have been in a long time. The most amazing thing is also happening. I am losing weight. I previously lost 0.2 pounds every few weeks; now I am going down by 0.4-1 pound at a time. I know it sounds slow.. but it is coming off and it is a great feeling to know that I am losing and will be losing for good.
And I still have a normal BMI at 24.6, which is pretty amazing, I know still only 0.4 under from overweight but it is normal.
