Call me a reluctant worker bee but I REALLY look forward to the holidays in a way like no other now that we are back in the 'retail love/hate relationship' business.
I HATE retail and the hours it chains you to the location. I am not one to sit within 4 walls...never have been and it's looking like at this point in my life never WILL be! It seems such drudgery when I think of all the delightful things I could be doing whilst cooling my heels waiting for customers to come to me. My theory is go TO the customers and grab them right out of their element.
Of course you aren't going to have that luxury packing 50 rooms of consignment furniture on your back now are you?
I've always taken our business to the streets...ah hem...not in THAT way!
I've taken my jewelry to the little Farmer's Markets, and I did all the estimates for our construction business in the customers homes...I liked that element of freedom. Now I've lost it in the business we have. I have to wait for people to come and find me...and ah...I don't really like that aspect. Oh sure I still have plenty of field time going to people's homes and giving them 'whole house' estimates on consignment..but those little field trips aren't nearly as plentiful as I wish. Now in the dog days of summer they are even fewer in between.
The one part of retail I do love is display and merchandising. I LOVE to drag furniture around layer pictures on the walls with other interesting objects and the all around aspect of sales that come with it...when the people...ah...actually show up.
We keep a daily log of walk ins..in season we can have over 200 in the summer we can have 10...get the picture...B~O~R~I~N~G would be a good word.
So I'm going to take some of my projects right into the shop and work on them there. I don't know how this will go because when I'm in the 'creation zone' I don't much care for interruptions...since interruptions are hopefully the whole reason you are there in the first place we'll see how this goes.
I have a mirror that I am applying fabric to that matches a cute little ottoman in the gallery and I'm going to add shells to it and then display the two together...one should enhance the opportunity for a sale to the other. It's not tedious work and hopefully I can tolerate interruptions without losing my flow. It's worth a shot. Then we also have some furniture that needs rehabbing...it's perfectly GREAT wood...but kind of old and tired looking. It needs sanded, painted and some enhancements made then it will fly out the doors. That sounds like a hubs job...hee..hee..the sanding, painting aspect...I get to swoop in for the fun part..that's the enhancement.
Anyhow I'm happy for the 4th of July mini vacation where I'll have 4 days off IN A ROW! That's a huge slice of heaven for us. We might take a trip to the Keys or at least a few day trips to Sanibel/Captiva...we were yearning to go to the mountains but it's actually HOTTER up there than down here in SW FL. That would be a trip wasted!
Our time is precious..even more so now with the retail chain around our ankles.
I was browsing at Barnes N Noble yesterday (my home away from home) and found an interesting Journal in the mark down section. I love journaling..even the written form and I liked the idea that this was a 'guided journal'....it peaked my curiosity and I opened it to find the following format:
I started my day by:
Major events going on in the world today:
My goals for today:
Today I feel:
The funniest thing that happened today:
The most memorable thing that occurred today:
The best part of my day:
Something I am looking forward to tomorrow:
After immediately thinking...GOSH my life is soooo bloody boring...I thought..hey for $6.98 I'm going to snag this. I think I'm going to try it out. At least it will push me to find something to look forward to tomorrow and THAT alone has to justify the price!
Maybe you might want to try it too...we all share and grow together here in Spark world...we all can benefit from 'The funniest thing that happened today'...if we need to notate it in our journal we'll be cued in to look for it right? Kinda like listing at least 3 things you are grateful for each day. You know at the top of THAT list...your name surely appears!
Keep it real...keep it SPARK!
I'll start my online journal tomorrow!
