choices large and small...

Saturday, June 30, 2012

it's so easy when you control your environment, your food choices, your fitness minutes, at home. but yesterday offered tests...

we went on a lovely hike by the river with good friends, who always enjoy stopping for lunch at a store/restaurant not too far from the trailhead. despite the fact that it is something of a "hippy oasis", with bins of bulk food, organic fruits and vegetables, etc, they do not offer a single vegan option for lunch - and would not make a veggie sandwich fresh (why couldn't they offer a hummus sandwich? how hard is that??). my choices were a) a veg wrap that included egg and cheese, or b) a plain garden salad. then i spotted a roasted veggie baguette with a hunk of cheese that looked like it could easily be removed and that really really really looked good. so i decided to get it and asked them to remove the cheese, which they willingly did, and DH who had come to the counter with a relatively healthy but nonvegan choice of a turkey sandwich, thought he would get one too. we sat down, thinking we had something tasty and relatively healthy ahead, only to find that the oil dripped on our hands. it was then i realized that it had pesto which meant a) oil and b) parmesan cheese. not a good choice at all... though it tasted good. the good news was that we both ate only half (note to self, order one item for the two of us and if we are still hungry, go back and get more, most portions are waaaay to big anyway). and the best part was the organic local cherries that we bought for dessert that were exquisitely delicious.

and this was followed by yet another restaurant for dinner and more choices. which is all to say that life is easy when you control it, but boy these choices make it difficult both to know what is right and to track afterwards. and i have to get through this type of situation for about the next five days until i can take control again on thursday when we finally settle in...choices!

I wonder why it is so slow for reataurants to creat healthy choices... must be that it is not much asked for after all, but maybe it is like it was with the nonbleached toilet paper, the manufacturers said it was impossible to produce toiletpaper without chlorinebleach but costumers demand made that paper possible in no time...I ned to become a more difficult costumer....

I think you did fantastic! I also have problems when I eat away from home and am out of my comfort zone. It's a lot easier to enjoy your food when you know exactly what's gone into making it. I try to make eating out a real treat, so I can enjoy my choices without guilt or stress.

The fact that you are actively thinking about your choices, even in these situations, is a victory in itself.

Great job, friend! You've discovered the key to lifelong health!
