They always ask "is that on your diet?"

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Thursday, June 28, 2012

I'm sure you have been asked that burning question by a family member, co-worker or friend. "Is that on your diet?"

I am on a life journey. On this journey I have to carefully plan my caloric intake and exercise to maintain momentum. While I try to make my calories count eating quality food (fruits, vegetables, high fiber grains, low-fat dairy and lean proteins) I know that I have to sometimes spend part of my calorie budget on a treat so that I don't feel deprived and learn to "live my plan". I build that treat into my calories. If I eat a 150 calorie snack size ice cream bar it's because I have allotted for it in my daily food plan.

There is nothing more frustrating than to have carefully calculated my calories to allow for a special food then have someone ask "Is that on your diet?" First, I'm not on a diet. Second, yes I planned for this food.

Now some people are truly trying to help. They think you are "blowing your plan" which MIGHT be true if you just ordered up the large Georgia Mud Fudge Blizzard at Dairy Queen for 1450 calories, but it might NOT be true if you got the Kiddie Cone at McDonald's for 45 calories.

So how do you deal with these "helpers"? I suggest that you tell them that you plan your food budget and live within it including the food you are currently enjoying. Use the opportunity to educate!

Yes, I've lost 76+ pounds. Have I eaten a steady diet of broccoli and watercress? NO. I have had a well-balanced approach to my nutrition. I make the MAJORITY of my calories be high quality, nutrient dense foods, but I have had treats. I eat out every week. This is how you succeed in changing from DIET mentality to LIFESTYLE CHANGE. You have to learn to LIVE on a budget. Just like we do with our finances!

So next time someone sees you eating that Hershey Almond chocolate bar (210 calories) and thinks you have fallen off the wagon don't get upset, just explain to them about your "plan". They will probably be impressed that you have learned how to include those occasional treats and STILL lose!

I hate that. I have one day a week that I call a "cheat day" where I let myself have a little enjoyment in food. Do I go overboard? No. Instead, I tend to eat towards the higher range in my caloric budget than middle or lower, which is what I usually do. I make room for a small treat, otherwise I will get fed up and binge. I agree. These comments are obnoxious, and I love your attitude on how to deal with them. 76+ lbs?! WOO HOO GIRL! :) Great work. All of you. You are an inspiration. I just recently started and am only at about 2 lbs, but I know I will get there!

I so know this all to be true! I call them my food police, and I am sorry they are just annoying! LOL I wish people were more concerned with their own selves than what others are doing, if they worked on their own mess of a self, the world would be so much better!

I agree this is not a DIET! Until people lost the diet mentality they will never break the cycle of gaining, losing, regain, lose again, regain and so on!!!!

I'm with Going-Strong, that question makes me so angry!
But I suppose it'd be better for everyone involved if I took a few deep breaths and explained instead of yelling at them to mind their own business. Next time I'll give it a try.

I really like this entry because I think everyone can relate to this! Some people don't realize how time consuming it is to plan ahead and log everything but it helps so we can have treats too! It's all about portion control. Like today I had chips and dip. I counted out 7 chips and put exactly two tbsp on my plate. It was good and I had enough after that. Everyone should be doing this even "skinny people." Just because you are thin doesn't mean you are healthy. Congrats on losing over 75lbs that is great. You deserve a treat!

Good attitude once again! ........ I just have to share:
One day was standing in line at the coffee shop .... (before SP)
I made mention of watching my weight BUT I opted for a Biscotti
(abt 200 cals)
The gal behind me BLURTED OUT for all to hear:
"THEN WHY ARE YOU BUYING A BISCOTTI!!!!!?" ......... emoticon

Congrats on your weight loss. Awesome!

I forget what it was I was eating when my brother asked " Is that a healthy choice for your plan?" I answered no not for my plan but it is for the rest of you because if I dont eat this and get it over with you will not like my attitude for the rest of the day and i will end up eating it anyway lol. My point is that sometimes it is just life that you want, you get it and then you move on. thanks for the blog

I find it really condescending when someone talks that way to me... like I'm a child and may not know better! Thankfully now that I'm thinner I don't hear that anymore but it does make my blood boil. I must be too thin skinned lol.

Congrats on the wonderful weight loss! You are an inspiration. If a friend asks me, "Is that on your diet?" I answer, "Yes." There is absolutely NOTHING that I CAN'T eat. The key is moderation, moderation, moderation. If you completely ban a food item from your diet, you will start to crave it and take the chance of binging on it at another time. Plus, like you said, you plan for it. I know I just started this journey, but I've done it before, so I understand how it all works. I have a well-meaning friend at work who keeps offering me things ... it's usually something healthy like fruit or something. But, I just politely say thank you, but I already have my daily intake of food planned out. They ALL mean well and we appreciate them for it.

The other thing that I find is when they walk by with the Girl Scout cookies, look at you and say, "Oh yeah, you can't have this anymore." I explain that I can have anything I want, I just have to be sure that that is the way I want to "spend" my calories! There are no "forbidden foods" on my plan, I just know what I really want to eat anymore!

You are so right! That's also why you're doing so well - you have the right attitude and the right plan. Given the choice to either ignore them or educate them you have the best idea. Having said all that, and having also been subjected to those "food police" , I have to say the first impulse is to whack them over the head with the nearest object!!!! I have never felt compelled to tell another adult what I think of what they are putting in their own mouth or how they ought to wear their hair or what would be a better way to dress! I am still floored by the people who think they have the right, or worse - the obligation, to do so. Great blog!

Wonderful blog!!! There is nothing more frustrating than people who in a sense eat your food right along with you and count your calories for you. So yes, educating them without wanting to smack some sense into them is a great suggestion. Now if I can learn the same control for those people who question my shopping choices " Is another pair of wedge sandals in your budget? Don't you already have quite a few?" lol...
I always wanna say, " thank you for counting my money for me, but last time I checked you weren't Suze Orman and I didn't hire you as a my financial planner."
Guess there are lots of different types of "helpers" out there...

LOL.

Keep up the great work!!! 76+ lbs is amazing!

    Great blog and so true!

It is not a diet but a lifestyle we are on. I have treats built into my calorie intake each day.

Helps me to get through the day making sure I eat only healthy and lean if I know I will have my treat at the end of the day. Also once a week is splurge for dinner time.

Better to lose slowly than starve yourself - lose it faster and then end up putting it back on because you haven`t adopted a new lifestyle and learnt to make the right choices on a daily basis.

::Applause!:: Great blog! Fortunately, I do not have that same problem. I have been telling people who comment on my weight loss that I am simply exercising and eating "healthier", not healthy ~ because that would be a lie ~ just healthi-er! I have my snacks, when I want them. :) My biggest problem is with my girls (20 & 22) who both assume that I can't go out to eat anymore or cook yummy food for them because I am trying to get thinner and healthier. I just keep telling them I can eat what I want ~ I just have to plan around it. I don't eat salads ALL the time. :)

Can't argue with results... way to go!

I'm not always sure why people think they need to question the things that I do... I try to opt for the thought that are just making conversation or merely concerned. --- I get more flack for turning down goodies, desserts and eating fruit, vegetables and my huge spinach, weird greens salads... the people in my life encourage my former bad habits... "a little bit of __________" won't matter. They don't realize that for me there is no such thing as a little bit...." Little bits are what turned into big bites and big pounds for me. I don't like the microscope examination by others of what I put into my mouth.... and sometimes sarcasm takes over.... *sigh*

Its amazing when people see you eat one of those treats and they say wow you've lost weight and you can still eat "real food". I just completed my menu for today because I know I was going to be eating out all day and even though I've designated Sat and Sun as my splurge days, I still want to ensure that I am not over my cals and I am somewhere within my other nutritional values (may not be as good as when I'm having a non-splurge day - but its not a totally blown day of mindless eating).

Great blog
