My father's pets need homes - Please Help!

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Please see the following note at my facebook page:!/note

My father in St. Louis is terminally ill and has been moved to a nursing home as he is no longer able to care for himself, or his pets. I am unable to take his four dogs in due to my own four, here in Ohio. I have had to expand my contact circles as I am not having any luck finding placements for these sweethearts, here, or there. Please help me find suitable homes for these loving animals.
All are spayed and neutered. All but Penny are chipped. All are medium sized - 50-60 lbs (i believe) - I asked the vet to forward their histories to me and can provide those. They are all in good health, and active. My father took them in when Penny was abandoned with her litter over 9 years ago. They are all each other have ever known, but behave on leashes well, and have no undue response with neighbor dogs while walking.

Penny is mom - she is 10-12 years old, not really certain. Social, beautiful, and smart.

Bonnie is daughter - 9 yrs old. Painfully shy, but sweet once corralled. Preferably should be able to stay with mom, but perhaps she would come out of her shell with loving kindness.

Clyde is son - 9 yrs old. Somewhat shy, but loving and social. More of a follower than a leader. Would be nice for him to stay with Tim, but again, loving kindness could bring him out.

Tim - son - also 9 -doesn't know a stranger, and is outgoing and lively.

Please let me know if there is any other information that you need.

Please feel free to forward to anyone who may be in a position to help, and let me know if there are any other avenues I might try. I have been contacting everyone I can find between St. Louis (where they are) and Ohio (where I am). I am happy to transport wherever they need to go. We are happy to make donations to whatever organizations can provide assistance, as these dogs are the reason my father has lasted this long and they are all he truly cares about.

Beautiful animals, but I won't have room for a dog of that size.

emoticon I am so glad that you are trying to find them a home. I live in Georgia and I will ask our vet what is a good route to take to find them homes. I will put them on my prayer list.

Call the vet and see if they know anyone. there is always someone that will bend a little. Local training clubs are good resources as well.

I have been contacting everyone I can find references for, for the last two months. Most rescues are not actual facilities, but networks of fosters - largely overburdened already. The number of animals in need of help is staggering. And lots of organizations are focusing on death row dogs, sick or abused dogs... these guys are happy and healthy - just in need of a good home - for which they get less attention.

I knew going in that this would be difficult. Older dogs are not as cute as puppies. But they still have lots of love to offer. My heart breaks a little more each day as my deadline moves closer.
