My first attempt at knitting

Monday, June 25, 2012

I found out that all the little infant beanies at the hospital are made 100% from volunteers. So I thought....hmmm....I should take up knitting....I wonder how hard it is??? I posted a message on the SP message boards and got LOTS OF GREAT ADVICE on how to start......I fellow sparker (Mom2) suggested that I try kniffty knitters that I could purchase at Walmart.....so this morning we have Tropical Storm Debbie visiting us (I live in FL)...and I thought what a great time to learn how to knit.....and off to Walmart I went.

I then used YouTube to follow some of the links fellow Sparkers had given me to learn how to make an infant hat using a round loom....I found one that was fantastic and so I started my project.

The first one took me about 3 hours to do because I was watching the video and following along.....going slow to make sure I didn't screw up....lol

I did the 2nd one in 50 minutes.....Here is the finished projects

Things I found out about knitting:

1.) kept my hands busy

2.) kept my mind COMPLETELY off of food

3.) very relaxing....almost meditative on the second one

4.) felt good about myself cause I will be giving the first gift from a stranger to lots of newborns....REALLY....HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!

5.) I'm OLD (NOT)....my hubby and boys called me GRANDMA....lol....but proceeded to ask that I make them COOL beanies when they saw the finsished products.....haha

    Those are so cute!

I really like that Pipsqueak yarn too, I use that a lot for hats. I just wish it came in a few more colors.

Good job on taking up something new!!! I started knitting about a year and a half ago and got completely addicted. The baby gear is definitely a good way to go, the projects are so tiny you get instant gratification when you're able to finish them quickly!

Friends made fun of me when I said that knitting was my new diet plan so I'm glad to hear it works for someone else as well - as long as my hands are knitting, they can't be putting food in my face!

Good luck with your new hobby!

Congratulations! They came out great. And the parents of the recipient will cherish it forever.

Oh, how cute are those! I love them...what a great idea! I never did pick up knitting because I was a smoker all of my life...so everything I touched, unfortunately, smelled of smoke but now that I don't smoke (yay, me)....maybe I'll give it a try! Looks fun and very rewarding!
