I went for a run today at my favorite place for long runs, The City of Rocks, a NM state park. Wishing I had taken pics, but I forgot.
The alarm went off at 5 am. My hubby, Randy, and I left by 5:30 and reached the City of Rocks at 6:10. I immediately started out for what was supposed to be an 11.5 mile run. Randy got "camp" set up for us. (water, gatorade, etc. left on the picnic table by the car) then started his run. His plan was to run 6 miles and then ride his bicycle while I finished.
The loop around the picnic areas is about 1.5 miles. It's quiet and we see lots of wildlife and so much prettier than running circles around a track, Today is no exception. We see jack rabbits, cotton tails, squirrels, lizards, birds, butterflies, and even a rattlesnake.
The sun was just peeking over the mountains as we made our first loop. Life is good! Set my gymboss for a 3 min. run/1 min. walk. By mile 3 the sun is getting higher and I've already wiped the sunscreen off my face along with all the sweat. Wishing I had brought some waterproof sunscreen to replenish. One side of the loop was in the sun, but also mostly downhill. The other side was shady from the rocks and mostly uphill, or so it seemed.
By mile 6, according to my NikePlus, it was getting hot and the shadows were quickly disappearing. Set my gymboss to 1min. run/1min. walk. DH finished his run and started exploring the park on his bike. I kept running and though my legs were getting tired, I still felt good. I kept well hydrated and ate sportbeans.
Mile 10, doing ok, trudging along knowing I had this run. I reached 11.5 miles and walked the .1 mile to the car where my favorite after run drink, chocolate milk, was waiting. Got my milk, started walking up the hill for cool down and to visit the out house, feeling great! Finished in 2 hours, 40 min. While walking, I got out the cell phone where I had started the RunKeeper program at the beginning of the run, then put it in my CamelBak and hadn't checked it since. It said I had only run 10.3 miles. So now I'm not sure how far I ran. I'm guessing somewhere in between RunKeeper and NikePlus. For any of you that are still reading all my ramblings, how do you keep track of mileage?
