Most of the time I like my life to be neat and orderly, and that includes the things around me. But tonight as I was reading other people's blogs, reading articles and thinking back over my time here on SparkPeople, I realize that being a success at a Healthy Lifestyle is not about PERFECTION! It's about discipline, consistency, baby steps, failing some days and succeeding on others -- it's about learning how to make the right choices, planning your life so you can carve out the time for exercise, and actually modifying your personality as you go along, and becoming a better person.
Why do you suppose we become a better person as we travel the road to a Healthy Lifestyle? I think one of the reasons is that we read the experiences other people go through to get to their goals. Many of them have bigger obstacles than we could ever imagine! I believe we learn to become more compassionate toward the problems and hardships of other people, perhaps try to walk that mile in their shoes for a change. I believe we learn to be more forgiving for the small missteps we make as we travel the road to our goals. OK, you didn't lose 4 pounds this month, and that was your goal. It doesn't make us a bad person and it doesn't make us a failure. We need to pat ourselves on the back the for 3 pounds we did lose, and give ourselves a reward for the fact that we LOST weight and didn't GAIN! It's a big step!
I believe after we have been members for 6 months, a year, 2 years or more -- we see things a lot differently than we did the day we first discovered this great site! Confidence is something we can help other people with. When you leave encouraging words on a blog written by a new friend, you are helping to build their confidence. When you give a spark goodie to one of the other members on one of your teams, it's giving your support and nudging their confidence.
Why do you suppose SparkPeople is such a big success and so many people are finding that at last they are shedding the weight they have tried to lose for years? Maybe because we are not only learning the tricks of the trade when it comes to Healthy Living, but because we are reaching out and giving our support and knowledge to others.
Spark On! There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
watch for those happy numbers!
