Need To Regain My Privacy

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

For some unknown reason, the neighbors I wish would move and sell to deaf mutes who have no pets decided it would be good to hack down the bottom 15-20 feet of ALL their pine tree branches which have provided us with a lovely privacy screen for the 13+ years we have lived here (they're here 3-4 years now)! emoticon I have no idea why they did this cos that is sooo not how one prunes pine trees and I have been recovering from my initial gutted reaction of just wanting to cry, and trying to brainstorm how to regain my privacy. Their house is also ugly and their second story newly-enlarged deck make me feel like I am now under a microscope. Savings have been slowly depleting cos my husband hasn't had a raise in 10 years and everything else has gone up dramatically in cost. I will also have 2 kids going to college in the fall. I will be exploring some options I've thought of soon, cos I want to enjoy my yard in privacy again. They have to be dumber than cotton to have thought this would possibly be good for either of us. Dumbasses.

Tonight, my younger son is having several friends sleep over for a belated birthday party (he had to make sure they could all come and tonight was the night that worked) and they've taken over the basement for the night.

I tackled the bike again cos I figured with the heat wave due tomorrow, there is no way I'd get on it when seriously hot. I didn't like it yet this time either, but I made myself do TWO loops this time, so I am pretty pleased with myself for doing that.

I also arranged a ladies lunch for Thursday at the Japanese hibachi place with the Lindas. emoticon After lunch, we'll come back to my house and swim. I spoke to Linda K for an hour last night and caught up a lot, but I'm certain we'll talk nonstop all day Thursday anyway LOL! She's been to Germany, Luxembourg, and some other European country, I forget which, since I last saw her, plus Chicago (her parents live in her house there), and she and her hubby and middle son (I guess older son now, since Ben died a year ago in a motorcycle accident) are all going to San Francisco next week. Her baby, Andy, 20, is at Harvard (goes to MIT) taking a summer course so can't join them. I LOVE hearing about all her travels! And Linda D, I haven't spoken to in a week or two, so it will be fun to all catch up! I'll have a pitcher of yummy lemon cucumber water chilling in my fridge for when we get back emoticon

My husband said he'd call town hall to find out if we can double our fence, given their (newly expanded, probably without a permit and not up to town code) second story deck. A friend of mine did that but her property abuts a shopping center. An additional fence on top of the other would be less expensive than buying 10-12 foot shrubs. When I spoke to her when they were starting the trimming, she lied to me and said they'd be pruning their trees back from the property line, which I said was great because their trees rain pollen worm-like dropping and hickory nuts into our pool (the pollen things clog our filter for about 2 weeks if we don't empty the skimmers three times a day or more) and the pine needles rain all over my patio, lounges and flower beds, as well as ending up in our pool.

If I went with a hedge, it would be a lot of $$$ to buy the height I'd need, I'd have to rip out all of my existing plantings, and would be a HUGE and onerous amount of work. In addition, there just isn't room for anything other than bulbs or annuals in the 8 inches or so between the patio and fence.

Enjoy your lunch, you've waited awhile for this.

Neighbors, makes you want to live in seclusion sometimes! You might want to ask them if they had plans in mind, if they didn't, you have such a green thumb, plant hedges or even plants like gardenias which will get big like hedges and smell good too!

I have a suggestion for you and your kids. Ask them to ask their friend to bring seeds that crawl. Plant very tall pieces of wood in the ground and the seeds right beside them. Then you can have a fence of growing plants.

I'd actually go ask the neighbors why they cut down the lovely pine trees and if they had plan for replacing them since they seem to be in design.
