Family dinner, being a vegetarian!

Monday, June 18, 2012

So Monday nights it is dinner with my sweethearts family at his mum's home. I love going as I really like his family, alot! They have accepted me as one of their own without hesitation~being I came from America to live with one of their own..I would probably be a little hesitant..but they weren't, or at least they didn't show it. It means a lot to me as I am a family oriented person, I miss mine very much..I miss seeing my great nieces and nephews growing up...I miss having lunch with my sisters, or my nieces...but, his family has helped ease that pain some!
Anyway...I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and though some of them know that, none of them are really aware of what it means, nor do I like pushing my choices on others. Monday night dinners can be hazardous to my eating. Especially now that I am eating healthier..I must say, they are not usually healthy, nor are there many healthy side dishes etc. Last night for example..it was a celebration of sorts for 3 birthdays..One of them being mine (Thursday is my b-day and I share it with one of my future brother in laws). Food on the barbie...it smelled great, and it was healthy..but I don't eat meat...so my options were vegetable spring rolls, hashbrowns, bread, onions (probably sautéed in lots of butter) and sweet potato. lots of carbs there, not a lot of protein. I did try snack some before I went but still.....I also brought a low fat cheese dip and baked crackers (helped some, but it is so good I had to sit away from it as I would have eaten all of it)! Then out come the spring rolls...again..one of those thing I love and cause I knew I couldn't eat much of the main meal, I ate quite a few of those..at least they were baked, small and vegetable..so not to be rude I did have to also eat some of the dinner...I took a chicken skewer to silently pass to my partner, I did take the sweet pot wedges, and a hashbrown thing added some onions on it...does anyone see any protein in there at all???? Of course also had to eat some birthday cake, but was able to pass that off openly to my sweetie as one of my sister in laws to be did the same to watch calories..thank goodness.
But put a bowl of lollies in front of me, with marshmallow bananas in it, and my hand reaches...they are fat free after all...but all sugar!!!!!
Needless to say I didn't feel very proud of my choices, but will redeem them today by eating very clean, and having a good exercise session..I did at least do 65 minutes on the spin bike yesterday so that was some help.
Anyway, I will learn to eat my protein sources before I head over on Monday nights and little by little will let the family know of my aversion to meat..they have accepted me as one of their own and I am sure they will accept my differences as well.
G'Day all!

glad the family has accepted you, it makes it so much easier. As for not eating meat, eat some protein earlier in the day. I do think people's views are changing and more people are accepting of how other people want to eat.

I loved reading about your family, and the celebration! Food is so much a part of family times, so I can surely understand eating goodies!

It sounds like you are back on track, and you were able to enjoy your sweetie's (and your) family!

Although I am a meat eater, I'd love some high protein vegetarian suggestions. I'd like to add beans and lentils to my diet, but have no idea where to start. Well, aside from bean burritos that is! emoticon

Sounds like you are doing great! You are going to have a kick butt gym room when you're done!!!

Glad the family is so accepting of you. Sounds like eating some protein before dinner will be the answer! LOL

You make me laugh :) And yes they do want to know mostly the love thing..and they do know that..it is quite obvious I believe when we are together..Being a vegetarian is something I am proud of, but it is not something a lot of people understand, I hate to come across as being the snobby yank :) Though I doubt they would think that!!!

I accept you, Melody! (Although I still eat meat.)

But I know it's important to want the family of the man you love to accept you.

PROBABLY they mainly want you to mostly love their son/brother/uncle---and that's the main thing they want from you.

At least... these are my thoughts about it.

In the meantime, I am impressed with your sensitivity to your future family's feelings.

Can we be friends?! Oh wait! We already are!!!
