Why I hate TOM...

Monday, June 18, 2012

Chances are, if you are a women, you know what TOM stands for. And chances are, if you are a man, you have stopped reading here. TOM, or time of the month for those not hip to the lingo is that one week women "generally" dread. Unless of course, you your TOM isn't every month and you are trying to conceive, which is good in the PCOS community. This week is my TOM.

I am tired, super tired, as in "Okay cardio is done, nap time" tired. I barely made it through my ST. In fact, I kinda skimped a bit on it, but I really felt like I was going to die or something.

Morning cardio was yet another interval increase, but so is every morning. So this morning on my treadmill I went 3 minutes at 4.0 mph and 2 minutes at 3.5 mph, repeat for 55 minutes. Though I got through the thing, and even did another killer 5 minutes at 4.0 at the end, I was drained! So drained. Generally I get enough of those "feel good chemicals" or "runner's high" to keep me active through my hour or so of ST and my two or three hours of dancing around the house afterwards. This week, not so much. I don't know if it's the True Blood I recorded yesterday or the huge massive Red Lobster feast I had, or if it really is just TOM, but I am soooo tired. It's annoying how tired I am.

Plus it doesn't help that I have been suffering from some killer swimmer's ear since Saturday. For those of you who don't know what I'm refering to, I'll explain. When you swim, or bathe, or generally put your head near water in any way, you run the risk of getting water trapped in there. There is the water that is just in the ear, and a quick head shake and gravity can get it out, then there is the dreaded evil behind the ear drum, where the only solution is to ADD more water. Oh the humanity!!!! Of course, I wouldn't be writing about this, unless it was the second of the possibilities. I took a shower and still just could shake it out...literally. So I added some ear drops I had picked up for a sore ear a couple of months back and wait for the connection between the two liquids. Once I hear the pop, I thought I was safe to let it drain out. But this wasn't good enough. Mind you this was on Saturday, so on Sunday I was suffering from a dizziness that would come and go. Today I can still feet something in that ear. So, luckily yesterday I picked up some Swimmer's Ear drops (yes that is a name brand). So hopefully that will help.

As a child I use to be constantly on medication for ear infections. It was a year ago thing and so bad, they were debating on putting in "tubes." Luckily my mom is a little strange and did that ear candle-ing thing and no problems since. But I still hate to mess with my ears, so this is driving me crazy as well.

So, yesterday for Father's Day, we let Dad decide where to go. He choose Red Lobster. Now, that is a place we normally don't go to. It's a bit more than what we like to spend on our weekly Sunday meal together (yes, the family eats one meal together a week) and combined with my mom's allergy to crab (another great injustice of the world) it was a real treat. So, did I go crazy? You bet I did, but this was the first time going there in 15 or so years. I got the lobster bisque (so good) and the crab parmesan linguini (half order). Plus one biscuit...my mom devoured the rest. All in all, after coming back and tracking it (yes it was already entered...awesomeness!) I realized I did a heck of a lot better than I was expecting. I was thinking, 1200 to 1500 calories. Wrong! Even with the two saltines, it was estimated at 950 or so calories. Considering I didn't even need a full dinner because of the amount I ate, I did really well.

I don't feel guilty at all. And sure, there is a chance that my wonderful 158.4 Saturday weight in will turn to 160 on Wednesday, but I enjoyed my food and my dad had a good time. I ate something I probably won't eat in another 5 years, plus I really do think my body is starting to work off this weight. But then again...I am also on my TOM! Damn TOM.

So we have come full circle, and this where I leave you. I need a shower, some ear drops and possibly a nap. Plus I have a lot of work to do today that I really don't want to do. Have a great week guys!!! And keep up the Spark POWER!

Dude, I can relate with the swimmers ear. Although honestly, I think mine might be a wax issue. I'm not 100% sure...but I don't hear the water in there like I normally would with swimmers ear. So I went and bought some ear wax removal kit at Walgreens this morning...hopefully it works, because I haven't been able to hear out of my left ear since Sunday night and it's driving me CRAZY!!!

OK, sorry about that venting. Hope your ear is better soon!! And I hope TOM eases up on you some soon too!!

Red Lobster...my favorite, and we're going for lunch one day this week while hubby is on vaca!! Cheddar Bay Biscuits, here I come! LOL!

OK, get a quick nap in, get some ear drops, and feel better!!
Hugs,
Beth

You are right...we all can relate to this one. TOM is the worst and it sucks even more if you have had the "baby factory" shut down and still have to live through this monthly tourcher! I always have the "I can't get enough food" feeling the week before and lately I am getting super emotional over anything the week of. I swear my cat could blink at me and I would start to cry....it's a mess! LOL
When I'm feeling that overly tired feeling I try to get a little more Iron in my system by veggies or a lean steak. I also try and drink as much fluids as I can and get to bed earlier...it's the TOM blues and I hope that you bounce out of them soon.

TOM can be beaten...but we have to be vigilent.
I have to monitor it...so the tiredness, hormones, emotions, cravings don't get the best of me before, during OR after.
To combat it I have to make sure I get my rest, take supplements, watch what/when I eat, take whatever pain killers I need to overcome "the symptoms" and simply KEEP EXERCISING right through it. OTHERWISE...I can guarantee a 3-7 lbs. weight gain every single month. It was EXHAUSTING going through that set back month after month UNTIL I began paying closer attention and FIGHTING BACK. emoticon
Through that I can lose weight without giving into to TOM.
I am in the throws of it RIGHT NOW.
I looked at my belly while on the elliptical and became DOWN. I looked at the calendar and realized WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I bloat really bad the week before...especially in the abominal area. To top it off a friend referred to both of us as "being overweight LIKE US"...and that kinda hurt my feelings. I just let it go. I get OVERLY sensitive during this time.
I feel tired/achy...feeling bad today. I went to bed at 8 yesterday and didn't wake up again until 5 this morning. I needed that rest. I took two pills early this morning. I have a plan to do a mini workout for a portion of my lunch and an evening workout at 5:45 this evening.
I take ginseng and green tea tablets to give me energy...it really helps.
It can/does effect us...the more we study our own bodies and learn how to combat the lovely gift it brings each month we don't have to settle or except set backs every month.
GIRL POWER!

Snail is right about the ST before cardio if you are doing them the same day! You muscles fatigue more during cardio, so you can't push as hard doing strength. Also, once you've done the strength, your muscles are totally revved up and begging for more, burning their most calories per minute, and cardio will be more efficient.

Hope you get over your ToM tiredness soon!

I battle the symptoms two weeks before my TOM and then when TOM hits...I am fine. This started a few years ago and has gotten much worse due to the PCOS. It's horrible because I am always thinking somethings wrong with me...mood wise...I get sleepy, depressed, unmotivated, grouchy....on and on....so really, TOM takes up two weeks of my month...ughhhh!

Not to rian on your parade, but I just wanted to share somehting that may be helpful to you. For weight loss, it's better to do cardio AFTER strength. Read up on it and see if it would be better for your situation. This is just what my program tells me, yours could be different.

I had major ear infections as a kid too! It's crazy how much we have in common!

    H Misha!

I totally understand where you are coming from with TOM. I feel tired about 3-4 days before it even starts. Then once it does start I don't really feel like doing much. I always get really bloated as well even if I stay away from high sodium foods and drink plenty of water the bloat wont go away or get better. I get emotional at the drop of a hat and my back always feels sore during TOM, not to mention the cramps. Overall, not the best part of my month of course, but once it ends my energy level rises and I feel great once again.

It looks like you had a great meal at Red Lobster and you did really well calorie wise. I too would have thought that it would have been more but that's what's great about tracking.
