Yoga is good for ...

Monday, June 18, 2012

The refrigerator (/freezer) wasn't holding temperature correctly. You pull out the instructions and the recommendation: clean the grills, clean around the condenser tubes. As soon as the bottom grill came off, the challenge began: find a variation on a twist in Balasana (Child's pose, Wisdom pose), and keep the breath steady. To see what you are doing, place the flashlight "just so". To keep the metal retractable measuring tape steady, I needed patience, endurance and minute controlled movements to catch the balls of lint. We'll see whether the refrigerator has better function after the cleaning.

I know that bringing a technician for cleaning such that I did might have produced a more thorough result -- but it feels good to know that yoga can make such a contribution to everyday life, to being able to look after one's household with more self-reliance.

You have all made good comments about the challenges of adding to routines that bring you peace of mind and well being in a busy life. Here, in the SparkPeople site you may be aware of the article: A Beginner's Guide to Yoga.
Here is the link (may not work in a comment to a blog):

Without a video, it is challenging to get the balance between staying with the breath, the pose and your state of mind. So if (from my practice of yoga hat) you need to focus on one thing by itself, it would be gaining the awareness of the steady in and out of your breath while you are doing any movement - including your regular activities (like getting the dust bunnies off of the refrigeration coils). Another video that has more emphasis on movement than on breath is: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource
/fitness_articles.asp?id=1747R>What this excerpt from a Fusion routine lacks is the resting pose "Savasana", which usually concludes a yoga practice. You can rest on your back, or seated, or even in some other way. You just want to receive the benefits, quietly of your practice.
Hope this helps...

I love reading your blogs on yoga, and like Nate, I really really REALLY need to incorporate it into my life. I'm not sure why I'm not, it's not like I'm strapped for time. And I have a video I can do at home. So, what's stopping me? That little voice that says, "it's not cardio." It shouldn't matter on the weekends, though, since I don't get a lot of cardio on the weekends anyway. I really want to work on meditation and relaxation techniques, since I tend to be high-strung most days.

Thank you for the reminder that I want to fit Yoga in my life. :-D

I keep telling myself that I want to try yoga but have not as of yet. Part of my problem is that I want to try a class for beginners I want to be in a class where everyone is on the same page. Beginners only. Not only that I want a class that works with my schedule. Seems like most of the classes that I have been researching are either too early...I'm not an early morning person and early morning doesn't work my schedule anyway during the week, I have to be to work real early as it is. Then there are classes that are while I am work. Then I find that the classes that are at night are more advanced. Any suggestions.
