Loose Skin and other artifacts

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Someone asked me if I had loose skin after losing weight. The answer is yes. The areas that are the worst are my sagging bosom, stomach, inner thighs, lower back and upper arms. This is the "postcard" from my 3 decade trip through obesity. I still have a long way to go so I know this will only sag more. Fortunately, my clothing camouflages most of this. Well made undergarments help provide shape as well.

The reason I bring this up at all (other than to answer those of you that sparkmailed and asked) is to make this point. While some things are NOT reversible with diet and exercise MANY are!

First - I FEEL better. You know what I'm talking about. No longer do I huff, puff and drag my body up stairs. I can stand in a line at the store without grinding pain in my legs and back. I can walk two miles!

I'm off the Blood Pressure Meds! I had a wonderful 115/68 blood pressure this morning. This means I don't have all those negative side effects of the meds. My cholesterol and triglycerides are NORMAL! They are better than many of my skinny friends!

My skin is clearer. Yes even 56 year olds can have breakouts but my new diet/fitness regimen has left me with healthier skin.

My digestive system has returned to normal. I know this is something people don't often speak about but trust me - IT MATTERS!

I have never had blood sugar issues but I do think if I had that would have benefited too so I mention it here only for those that might be in that situation now. I do believe you will only see improvement with weight loss and diet changes.

Sleep - As the weight comes off my sleep gets better and better. Sleep is so important in our overall health.

Confidence - I know that I CAN do this because I HAVE. That gives me more confidence to push on (remember my perseverance blog yesterday?) Success breeds success.

---------------------

Now given that LONG list of benefits and reversed health issues do you see why I'm NOT hung up about the loose skin? In a small way, as I shower and dress each morning it's a reminder to me of where I was and where I NEVER want to be again.

Stay tuned. 75 pounds are gone and I've got 60 more to go. Why not join me on the journey? Let's do it!

Press On!

I think age has a lot to do with skin returning to normal...in my 20s, 30s it would, but it is less elastic now in my 50s so may have to live with it but better than living at a higher weight. Thanks for all your good posts.

Enjoyed this! I think given some time, the skin catches up somewhat, doesnt it? Well I hope so anyways :) Wishing you continued success on your journey!

Hello, your blogs are excellent. I commend you on your success and great attitude. In regards to excess skin, I have seen a person loose 100 lbs and have very taut skin by making sure they were taking in more than half of their body weight in protein g's per day. So, if a person's weight is 200 lbs they would need to have over 100g of protein a day. Best achieved with good quality protein powder ( not bars since they contain a lots of carbs) Since skin is made up of protein as they lost, their body had the protein it needed to repair the skin. They looked fabulous. Keep up the hard work. God Bless!

Great job on the weight loss! I read a blog by another Sparker who has lost 100 lbs and had some success losing some of the loose skin through exercise.

Great attitude, and I can share that over time there is some improvement. I still have a ways to go to final goal (I reset my counter so it doesn't looks as great), yet other than the tummy, most areas have improved. Here is to doing the working and making it work! emoticon

Holy Cow--I could have written that list--only you did it better! Everything is so true. The digestive system thing is so great, isn't it? We don't talk about that much, but it makes life easier when things are regular and constant diarrhea isn't a fact of life!

Like you, I get the "skin" question all the time ! And YES, it happens. But I tell people that my heart would rather carry around a little saggy skin then an extra 150lbs !

I also have a lot of weight to lose and I am wondering if there is any natural way without surgery to get rid of sagging skin? Are there any exercises or dietary supplements that can help? I once lost 50 lbs. 10 years ago, but they came back on and I really want to lose about 80 lbs. I just started this program and I am very excited about it. I am so busy calculating all my food options, I haven't had time to start an exercise regime yet. I am not a couch potato though. I am active doing my housework, yard work and other things. When I go shopping, I park at a distance from the stores so I can get a little walking in.

I am so glad you mentioned saggy skin. We who have lost or are trying to lose a lot of weight need to be OK with having extra skin. We need to feel good about our bodies as we are, even while we're working hard to get and stay fit and healthy. Last summer, someone posted: I didn't have a perfect body before I lost weight, I won't have a perfect body after. I completely understand being self-conscious about appearance! I'm doing a sprint triathlon in a few weeks as an obese middle aged woman, and believe me, wearing athletic gear brings out every bit of my self-consciousness! I see 2 choices: acknowledge it and do the race regardless, or let my worry about someone else's perceptions stop me. No H8, right? For others, for ourselves, for saggy skin. I'm so impressed with your progress, effort, honesty. I'm with you!

Great Blog. I have maintiained about 60 pound weight loss for about a year and have saggy skin but I think it is a little less saggy than it was. Maybe I just want it to be. I would like to lose about 20 to 30 more pounds but my body seems to like it where it is right now. I'm so much better off than I was 60 pounds ago that I'm not pushing too hard to lose the weight.

I've lost the weight - and loose skin is making me crazy! It is 100 degrees here today - and I am wearing 3/4 length sleeves and cropped jeans. Even though I can clearly see muscle definition on my arms (outer arms) there is loose skin on the inner upper arms. Thighs, too. I can NEVER wear a tank top or a sleeveless blouse or shorts again - and I have been looking for help with this everywhere. I've become proud of my fully dressed body - but am still SO distressed by it, up close. Even my husband noticed it - now I wear long sleeve nightgowns!!!! I even work out in long sleeve tops. If you see any improvement in this area, please let me know. I pray for my full confidence back - do you think it will improve over time?

Another reminder to be kind to ourselves and others no matter WHAT we/they look like. You just never know what people have been through. Congrats on being HEALTHY because you can't put a price on that. (Nothing like a good undergarment too, huh? Ha!)

I hear you. I yo yoed for many years and my skin really paid the price. I have maintained for 3 years now and I have seen some improvement with regular strength training. Loose skin is definitely NOT a reason to give up on weight loss efforts. The many benefits of loosing outweigh the negative 99 to 1... Spark on!

I call the saggy skin the Weight Loss Dirty Little Secret. I am surprised how little the weightloss experts talk about it--maybe they are afraid of scaring people off their weightloss programs. However, I think people should be warned, so that they do not feel abnormal when they start to sag. I'd choose to look like a bloodhound if it means being a healthy, fit, active bloodhound, and I'd rather have a turkey wattle than a double chin. Congratulations for choosing to be healthy and happy.

Testify, sister!! Congratulations on your weight loss. I got the full body scan last week at the Charlotte airport and the results warranted a pat down. I told the "patter" I'd lost 130 pounds and the problem was probably loose skin--eeek!! Wish I could get things surgically tightened up, but I won't even get my ears pierced. Hooray for Spanx!!
