Help, I am a Whole Foods free-sample calorie junkie

Sunday, June 17, 2012

It is my dirty secret. I chow-down on free-samples. This is specially true at Whole Foods. I feel that since I am paying a huge mark-up primium to shop at Whole Foods that I deserve to eat as much as I can when free-samples are offered. They always have tons of free-samples. I love it and I hate it.

Now that I am keeping a food journal, I wouldn't even know how to calculate the free-samples. In fact, I would rather just not know. Perhaps "Free-samples" = "Free-calories"? Not.

The free-sample thing plays on my guilt in two ways. If I don't take the free-sample, I feel like I am not being a good steward of my money because the free-samples are factored into the mark-up. If I do take the free-samples, I feel like a thief if I do not buy enough groceries.

In the end I take the free-samples. Not only do I take the free samples, I sometimes return to the good free-sample lane for a second or third pass if the sample is really good. There. It is my shame. I admit it.

I know this feeling!!!!! I actually stopped because, one day, I was free sample binging at Sam's Club. I then came home and put my bites into the tracker. Oh my, I had a 300 calorie "sample". Really?! I sampled things I wouldn't even consider purchasing to have the full meal. I will say the samples at Whole Foods tend to be a better nutrition wise. However, I've had a bleu cheese, pear, grilled cheese sample there that I would bet was around 100 calories.

Now, if I'm hungry (at all) when I go to Whole Foods, I grab a quick salad or something 1st that I will really enjoy. That way I can be more selective about the samples I do try.

Best wishes!!

Way to be honest and own it. I am going to guess that the samples are small right? You put in the item and guess at the size but I would say may .25 or less depending on what it is. Good luck.
