WARNING! Excess Skin Pictures--NOT PRETTY!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Got a lot of comments about the picture of me in my shorts from the last blog. When I sat down in that chair and had room to spare on either side, I had son snap the picture for proof. I was wearing shorts, and my legs looked okay. NEVER good, my legs always have been and always will be short and heavy. And now with the addition of some varicose veins, some bumps and some loose skin, it really is not pretty. But they seemed to look "okay" in that picture.

So for proof I do have lots and lots of excess skin, I just went upstairs, put on my bathing suit and snapped these awful pictures. Please don't judge me, this took a lot of courage!

I bought a cover-up with long sleeves and it comes to my knees, so I don't have to expose my trouble spots until absolutely necessary!

Here are my horrible batwing upper arms. I honestly don't think I've ever seen any that were any worse. Of course I haven't seen many...who shows those off? Only me, evidently. Is there any wonder I do not wear sleeveless or even short-sleeved tops. NOPE--all my tops have got to be elbow length or longer before I will go out in public.

This picture is dark--but I think you can see the awful upper legs. Also no short-shorts in my future--but who really wants to see any 61-year old woman in short-shorts anyway?

I also bought a couple of sleeveless tops, but always wear them with some kind of cover-up. I don't mind the cover-ups, but sometimes I wish I could just be cool like everyone else who can wear sleeveless clothing.

So that is the awful truth. Still I think it's better then when all that excess skin was filled to the stretching point with FAT!

Good for you. You are right, way better to have loose skin than filled in skin. Think of that extra "room" as space to fill with love and compassion. It won't show, but you have room for it. It took a lot of courage and honesty to post these photos....but they really reveal the beauty of who you are!

Love your honesty and willingness to share with others. We all age and no matter how much we wish our bodies looked like they did when we were younger or thinner or whatever, we have to be honest with ourselves and accept that we change! Yes, you could have surgery to remove the excess skin as suggested by another post, but that is expensive, carries some considerable risks, and leaves scars. I like that your last picture shows that you chose an outfit that flatters you. We all have imperfections but carefully choosing your wardrobe to accent your assets and cover your less than perfect areas is what we all try to do. You look great and kudos to you for being brave enough to share what others cannot.

You are SO brave to post those photos! I've been wanting to do something similar (a lot of people tell me "you don't look like you have excess skin!" so I kind of want to prove it. But I am not as brave as you.

I think you look wonderful! And you should wear sleeveless shirts, regardless of your arms. I finally decided to start doing it, and I'm feeling more and more comfortable with it.

Don't apologize for proof of hard work, determination, & dedication. The excess skin is like a badge of honor. You're very beautiful & courageous. You also inspire me. I've lost 132 lbs so far and I want to loose about 76 more. I do take alot more pics now but I hope when all is said and done and I'm at my goal that I have even 1/2 the guts you do to take pictures of myself. May I ask what your starting weight was? My heaviest was (and never will be again) 328 lbs...Best Wishes to you!

Thank you for your story. I am proud for you and think you are a snazzy looking lady. I am 64 and was just wondering yesterday what was going to happen to all the skin when I lost my wieght.
I notice on Biggest Loser that they seem tight and no loose skin. Maybe it is all that exercise they do which is not me yet. I am working on just walking 30 to 60 minutes 2-3 x week. lol
Keep up the good work.

when i see my arms a-flappin' in the breeze, i think of the song "i can fly." you're so right, that it's better to have empty skin than skin filled to the stretching point with fat, but it is still difficult. i've heard of people wearing their baggy skin like a badge...i may never be there, but i will persevere. i've lost 105 lbs so far, and there is more sagginess as the days go by. thanks for your bravery and your honesty. keep up the good fight! emoticon

You've done really well losing weight; wish I could say I've done as well. If extra skin is one of the prices we have to pay for losing, it's still worth it because we're doing great things for our health.

I have a bunch of loose skin too. Not as much as in your photos, but a lot.

Weight lifting has helped fill up the skin somewhat. Check out the "New Rules of Lifting for Women"

Over time it shrinks back somewhat, too. This January one of my sisters asked if I'd had plastic surgery to remove it - she hadn't seen me since I reached goal two years before.

And I rock a bikini anyway, because SO WHAT. ;-)

Even after gaining back 50 lbs, I still have a good bit of loose skin. But, to me, it is a badge of courage - right along with the stretch marks from carrying my kids. And, besides, you can dress the loose skin a lot better than you can the fat that used to be in them.

Congrats on the hard work. I think you look beautiful!

You're healthier, and you'll have better quality of life. Sleeveless shirts will just lead to sunburns anyway!

I have some really awful stretchmarks that won't ever go away. But they are just my war scars. Only I can see them. They are victory lines, to me.

I have loose skin also from losing 100 pounds. Like you I wear shorts to my knees, no sleeveless, and no bikini...lol.

However, I am healthy, happy and accept this body. The one area of change I may work on is my face with laser resurfacing.

You look beautiful! Enjoy your new happy healthy self. You are so much better off losing that fat.

Great job.

Congrats on your progress! I know how it is to feel self-conscious about parts of your body. But it's getting so hot around here that I just had to let that go, it wasn't worth risking heat stroke! I consider any excess skin I have a badge of accomplishment for shedding weight.

So, here's the thing. People are rarely ashamed or embarassed by scars. Usually they tell a chapter in your life. Oh, scars on my knees? Youthful attempts at popping wheelies in the gravel (bad idea). Oh, the scar from 48 stitches on my lip? I was saying my goodbyes to a German Shepherd when I was 4 and she didn't like me in her space so she took a chunk out of my face. Never get in a dog's space. I think people (including me) take some sort of odd pride in these details and lessons.

With this in mind, I've been trying really hard to see my stretchmarks and other issues as "battlescars." We're fighting for a better quality of life, how is that anything to be ashamed of? My stretchmarks are scars and the lesson I learned (much like popping wheelies in gravel and getting in a dog's space) is don't do whatever it was that I did to get them in the first place. Get healthy. If someone asks me about them, I say I got those from kicking fat's @ss. Consequently, I have started to take an odd pride in my battle scars--I earned them. Go figure. Attitude is EVERYTHING!

Congratulations to you! If you want to go sleeveless--do it! You shouldn't be ashamed of the evidence of your hard work.

You look great! What an achievement--and thank you for sharing your pictures. I still have "fat wings" and would happiy trade for "bat wings"! I also wear long sleeves etc, but am so much hotter with my layer of insulating fat.....some day, I will sport less fat, and if that means more loose skin, then...good trade.!
