I have been a member of Spark People since 2008; however, due to the development of back problems I haven't been as consistent as I should. I am working very hard to change that. I lost 70 lbs, starting in 2007 and through 2008. I was a size 16-18 when I first started losing weight, and got down to a size 8. Then in July of 2008, I started having horrible pains in my right leg, to the point of not being able to move. After several doctor visits, we discovered that I had two herniated disks in my lower back. There was no other option but for me to have surgery. After the surgery, I was on bed rest for two weeks, then slowly allowed to become more active. As I have always struggled with my weight, it didn't take long to gain 30 lbs during this inactive time. But eventually I was able to drop the weight I gained back. Two years later, in 2010, I began having severe back pains again. I went back to the doctor that did my surgery and discovered that the disks in my back are degenerating at a rapid pace: degenerative disk disease is what I was diagnosed with. I am not allowed to twist, bend or pick up more than 10 lbs. I lost my job because I couldn't physically do the required work, and have been out of work since. Unfortunately, I do not qualify for disability (but that is a whole other blog in itself!). I kinda gave up for a while, and slowly began putting weight back on. Which I shouldn't have done with my condition. I gotta wake up call after seeing myself in some pictures!! I went to physical therapy to learn how to work out and manage my pain. I started going back to the gym in February of this year, and am now down 12 lbs! My boyfriend has started going with me and we are motivating each other to keep going and to lose this weight!!
