I'll know I'm done when...

Sometimes, when we've never been thin or haven't been for a long time, we can only guess what our ultimate "goal weight" will be. More than a specific number, I've decided I'll know exactly when my weight loss journey will be over and I'll be ready to enter maintenance. I'll know I'm done...

...when I no longer feel the compulsion to step on the scale daily and see the numbers decrease.

...when I can see my collarbones completely and distinctly.

...when my chest shrinks to a normal (for me) size (around 36C).

...when I regain my normal body shape, somewhere between hourglass and upper triangle.

...when I shop for clothes I love and that fit my style, rather than for clothes that make me look thinner or fit a certain number.

...when I feel attractive or sexy again, and don't mind dressing up.

...when I stop measuring my food.

...when I look thin (ie "normal") in pictures even in funny positions/angles or in awkward-fitting clothes.

...when I look in the mirror and feel satisfied with what I see.

...when I can go to the doctor without worrying about stepping on their scale.

...when I fit into my wedding dress again (about 6-8 inches around the bust and waist to go!).

...when I look at pictures of me next to people of all sizes, big or small, and feel okay with my size in relation to them.

...when I no longer think about food constantly - planning out meals, ideas, snacks, and times, etc.

...when I feel confident in public without constantly verifying the lay of my clothes, my posture, etc.

...when I'm comfortable taking a single picture, rather than multiple shots, and don't worry how it'll turn out.

...when I look at those pictures afterwards and am satisfied (not asking to be happy constantly, just satisfied).

...when I stop comparing my current self with old pictures.

...when I can honestly say I'm a success story (because no matter what anyone tells me right now, I feel like I'm a success-in-progress, not a completed story).

...when I feel and look fit and healthy, rather than super-thin.

...when I no longer care if I lose another pound, because I'm happy just the way I am.

Is this the blog you were referring to? It's a great one to go back and have a look at every once in a while to see if you've arrived.

I think the things that you listed are so much more important than the number on the scale. I am trying to wean myself from weighing every day, multiple times per day. Maybe if I focus more on how I feel and not on the numbers I'll do better.

Thanks for this post. I need to remember that there is life after needing to loose weight and loosing weight. So much of my life has been spent in those two states that I'm going to have to learn a new normal once I get to goal.

That is well said..........Though I remember when I lost weight the last time and got to my doctor's set goal, I never felt good enough, or satisfied with my image in the mirror. Remember to adjust your mindset as well as your physical body. What I am saying is that there seems to be a lag in your mind, and it still thinks you are overweight, even when you are not............
Good Luck! emoticon

I can honestly say I already have one or two of those down at just over the halfway point. I don't always feel great about my body but I do feel a lot better about it than I did 44 pounds ago.

I would like to think that someday I could actually be "done." But I know if I don't work at it every single day, I will quickly slip back into old habits and the weight will return. If I ever consider myself "done," it will simply serve as an excuse to overeat. So I have to consider myself a "work in progress" and keep trying to lose 5 lbs.

That being said, I would LOVE it if I could quit obsessing over food and just eat intuitively. I don't track either, but I did during my weight loss journey. Now I just try to control myself and not eat portions that are too big, and also cook with low-fat ingredients whenever possible. I do treat myself occasionally. Yesterday I had Fettuccine Alfredeaux (not a misspelling, it was a Cajun restaurant), for lunch and it was wonderful. I had the small lunch portion without chicken, but I'm sure it was still too many calories. Must also have been salty cause I'm up a pound today, so will have to be extra conscientious about my choices for the next few days. Good luck in your goal to be "done." But I fear I will never be there. And for me, that is probably a good thing. We all have to do what works for us.

GREAT BLOG!

Ever Hopeful - I will definitely not be counting calories and monitoring my food after I'm done losing weight! I've lost half my weight through intuitive eating, without calorie counting, and that's very comfortable for me. I don't expect to be happy with my body 100% of the time, but I'll know I'm done when I'm back to where I was over a decade ago, when my concern when I take pictures isn't centered around my body, but other things. Even when I was thin, I was never fully satisfied with my body, but after coming back from 255 lbs, I have a new perspective, and already appreciate where I am more. I don't think anything on my list was unrealistic for me - it's a very personal list, and one I wrote so that I would know when I'm satisfied and ready to stop, rather than shooting for a specific number (which would make me obsess and be miserable).

great list though i think a couple might be unrealistic i have some friends who are very slim ,have a perfect body but they have their off days when things donīt sit right or they feel unattractive or fat.also from all that i have read on this site the ones that have lost weight and kept it off still to this day moniter and count their food and calories.otherwise i think they are great.after all it is our bodies not other people so only we can know what is comfortable for us.you are doing a great job.keep up the good work. emoticon emoticon emoticon

It's so comforting to know that I have so many of these same feelings. In my daily life I don't have anyone who I think I can talk to about these things. I am not yet ready to have my picture taken, but I want to be. There are so many vacation pictures of plants or animals, so I know I was there to take them. And there might be ONE of me. Thank you for sharing! Have a beautiful weekend!
