Well, I didn't go for that walk yesterday. Work got in the way, though it's no excuse. I read something today that said that not having time is not an excuse. Helen Keller, Albert Einstein et al all had the same amount of time in their days.
I have, however, been thinking a lot about what it is I'm trying to do - become healthier - and not becoming totally overwhelmed by the magnitude of the overall long term goal. So, I've been thinking about how to set some mini or short or medium term goals. After all, all this surplus weight didn't appear overnight, so it's going to take some time to send it on its way. I need some smaller goals which are attainable and are steps in the direction towards the bigger goal. My natural tendency is to try to change everything all at once, and I know that's not realistic or sustainable. I often think it's all or nothing/black or white, and don't acknowledge that half-way/grey is okay at times.
Mini goals I've decided to start on today are:
- moving/walking for 20 minutes per day twice a week for the next two weeks (up from 0 currently)
- listening to my hypnosis/relaxation CD three times a week for the next two weeks
- logging all my meals daily for the next two weeks (I've just downloaded the Spark People android app to my phone to help with this)
And so, I'm making these commitments to myself and am off to prepare a check-off sheet where I can track them and then celebrate when I am successful. Here's to two weeks of baby steps!
