A Rough Run Today

5:00 Alarm goes off...so I went downstairs and had a quick cup of coffee from the Kerug. Got my running clothes on and went back to sleep for an hour.

6:15 Alarm 2 goes off...I brushed my teeth, put on my garmin.

6:30 Met my running buddies in my driveway. We were all half awake.

This is the first run of the summer. It was hot and muggy...there was a slight drizzle...which I didn't mind because I think it actually cools you off. Just glad to have my hat on so it keeps the rain out of my eyes.

And off we went to a local trail...to be back before the husbands had to leave for work. It was so hard!!! I'm always learning from my runs...today was another learning experience. Lately coffee has really been helping me with my runs...but today my stomach was just off. I don't know if it's because I went back to bed. I was hoping that getting up early I would be able to digest my food in time. But maybe falling back asleep was a mistake.

So...I think I may just have to do my early runs without coffee and deal with less energy. Anyone else have this problem?

Hoping everyone is having a great day. We are having lots of rain coming our way.

    As much as I love coffee I don't think I could run on it. On my early morning runs I have a small glass of water and a small yogurt before I go out then the thought of coffee and a big bowl of cereal carries me through the rough patches.
Hope next time feels better, don't give in!

    Coffee always has a way of giving me a stomach ache if I drink it before a run. Like on Monday, I was supposed to work out with my friend lifting weights. I was still drinking my coffee around 10:00 but figured I was fine because I was just lifting weights. Well the workout fell through so I went for a run with my running group instead.

The run started just an hour after I had finished my cup of coffee and I had my pre-workout snack too late. So I was already messed up.

The run started out great and I was full of energy and actually running faster than the group. After our 2 mile turn around point, my stomach started giving me some problems. I tried to ignore it but it came back full force during mile 3. I finished the 4 mile run but then had stomach problems the next few hours afterwards. I am blaming it on the coffee and the lack of preparing for the run. It could be many other things though like dehydration, lack of sleep, weekend eating, etc.....

Run and learn! Always something new to learn!

    I'm so sorry you had a bad run! I hate it when that happens, I haven't been able to run for the last few days to all of my meeting with the corporate jets. Hoping soon though!!

    Maybe it was the time in between having the coffee and when you actually ran, not so much the going back to sleep? Caffeine can be beneficial but maybe closer to when you actually go out...
Its nice you and your friends get to run together like that :)

    Too bad about feeling bad on your run today. I don't know, maybe it was going back to sleep....I know I always feel worse when I do that. Getting up early the 1st time is hard, but I get over it better than going back to sleep & getting up a second time. Just an idea to consider if it wasn't a normal routine. Hope it's better tomorrow.

    I can't get out of bed without a cup of coffee first, and I don't have trouble with my stomach when I run with a cup of coffee in me. On race days, I have a very small cup (espresso size).

You might need more data to figure out if coffee is the problem. I would repeat exactly what you did today at least one more time before trying something else. (It's possible that your stomach was acting up because of something you ate yesterday, not the coffee you drank thiis morning.)

It's not clear whether or not you ate anything with your cup of coffee. I'm fine with just coffee on workout days where my workout is an hour or less. When my workout is longer, I usually eat a couple of Kashi 7-grain crackers for a medium-long workout, or a couple of bites of a granola bar.

Also, if it turns out that coffee does bother your stomach but you feel you need the caffeine, there are other options, such as tea, Gu with caffeine etc. Interestingly, tea just kills my stomach (wheres many people have fewer problems with tea than coffee).
