I have just returned from 3 days/2 nights camping at Devil's Lake State Park.
I can EASILY say this was the best camping trip EVER! I wouldn't add or subtract a single moment! We have NEVER had a trip with great weather the whole time.....dare I say....this was? 85* and sunny on Friday, 88* and sunny on Saturday, and 87* and sunny on Sunday. GORGEOUS!
We started out Friday by setting up our campsite....including our AWESOME new tent! Has a "mudroom" so we don't get so much dirt inside. We are pro's at set-up, even with a never-been-set-up-before tent, we had the whole campsite ready in about 30 min.
After set-up, we decided to head to the beach for a bit. Whenever we have gond to Devil's lake....it has been in the 30's/40's. We haven't ever been able to use the beach, so we definitely took advantage of the heat!
After our lazy afternoon on the beach, we cooked up dinner (roast beef and gravy and green beans on the fire!)
Once the dinner dishes were complete, we hiked (some mild rock climbing too,) down at Parfrey Glen. It is a beautiful lush canyon trail, hiked for 70 minutes.
We definitely indulged in some treats by the fire to end the night!
Saturday morning, woke up and cooked up some bacon and eggs, then were ready to head out!
We went rock climbing/cliff-scaling/hiking for 2 1/2 hours. Was HOT in thr sunny 88* weather!
When I say we rock climb, I mean we ACTUALLY rock climb, lol.
That hike/climb was EXHAUSTING! So much fun! After we cooked dinner, we headed back to the beach to play football. (I love playing catch! I've got quite a beautiful spiral, if I do say so myself!)
Sunday morning we were up bright and early, cooked some breakfast, and went off for more hiking! This was a laid back hike. It was fast-paced, and never a steady elevation, but compared to all the climbing, it was easy. That hike was a lovely 4 miles.
Spent some more time at the beach after lunch, then headed home.
There was LOTS of wonderful moments even beyond all that!
Devil's Lake is where Josiah and I had our first date. We hiked, talked, and ultimately fell in love. (Cue the "awwwws." lol.)
Friday night we decided to listen to some music on his phone. He put the music player on random, and the volume low. A few songs in, the song that was playing stopped in the middle of the song, and randomly jumped to "our song." It was completely simple and absolutely wonderful! Sweet reminder of the AWESOMENESS that is us!
We realized that this year, the campground boasted spiders that numbered about 14 spiders per square foot. They were EVERYWHERE! I've never been crawled on by this many spiders in a weekend before!
After bed, we heard a raccoon wandering around the site outside the tent. This is quite a normal occurance for camping. We keep the food and drink coolers outside, but under the picnic benches, so animals can't open them. We keep all other food in the car or tent, depending on what it is (if it's a can or something that an animal can't really smell/won't go after, then we keep it in the tent. )
After dozing off again, I was awoken by rustling near the tent. I woke Josiah up and told him the coon was in the tent. (Our tent has a main room, then a separate "mudroom." So, Mr Coon was in the "mudroom" and we had the fabric wall zipped up between us. He went out into the mudroom and the doorflap was open-ish, but there were no animals in the tent. One second later, raccoon zips into the tent, before screaching to a halt upon the realization that there are people standing a few inches away. He took off, lol. But it was mega-cute!!!
The whole weekend was spent laughing, smiling and feeling those "in-love" butterflies. Yup! Perfect weekend!
