5k #2

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Since we're not moving, and since it looks like so much fun, I'm going to try to *jog* a 5k in August. It's the Color Run - participants start out in a white t-shirt and by the time they cross the finish line, they're tie-dyed. Fun stuff! My first 5k was the day after a Color Run, on the same course. Just seeing the explosion of leftover (non-toxic and completely washable) color all over the road was fun. :)

More importantly, though, a 5k two months out is the perfect motivation for summer. I've had a hard time getting off my duff since my first 5k. It's been alternating between wonderful summer thunderstorms (of which we need more - wildfires everywhere!) and 90+-degree sun. Some place, the sun doesn't make such a huge difference. You know, places where there's atmosphere, like in Florida. :) Here, though, you sit still in a sunbeam and you'll overheat within minutes, even in an air-conditioned car. (Could be worse, though - we could have moved to Phoenix!) At any rate, with all this weather it's been difficult to get out of the house (plus blood loss - for some reason, that time of the month since having the baby boy knocks me flat for ten days - trying to drink more and take supplements to see if it helps). I need out of the house. The baby needs out of the house. I want more exercise! I've finally brought the scale number back down to my post-pregnancy plateau after our trip, and I want to surpass it again. Better yet, however, I can see and feel a difference in my belly flab. It's still way flabby (never tightened up again after the baby and pre-eclamptic edema), but I can finally feel muscle underneath it. Hurray! And my waist is more apparent, regardless of what number my tape measure reads.

I feel like I'm digressing. Maybe I just feel like my thought process is all over the place - probably because it is!

5k #2 will be on August 11. That gives me just enough time to get in some good training and increase my stamina. I don't know for certain that I will be able to jog any of the race, even after good training. My joints might not be able to handle the impact yet. But that's the goal - Jog at least a third of the distance. I'd also really like to shave 6 minutes off my previous time. I think that's awesome progress if I can manage it! :D

Congratulations on your progress, and good luck with your 5K! You can do this. And you can shave time off your last run.

You are doing great and congrats on the new muscles! You are an inspiration for me to get out there and do some real distance training. Keep up the good work and you will achieve your goals :)

Good for you girlie. Im doing my 1st 5k next month on the 14th. However, im walking. I just had a baby via c-sec who will be 4 months on the 17th. I am really just getting back into my workout routine. My goal was to run three 5k's by the end of the yr but since this one is so close, im no where near fit to jog or run. It should be fun and most of all getting in some exercise. If you dont mind sharing, how long did it take you to complete the first 5k?
