This race was run on dirt roads and trails, so it was very dusty and dry. I set out to try and get under 30 minutes again, but in the first mile my legs were feeling kind of stiff and heavy after my bike ride yesterday. I wanted to keep running and not take any walk breaks so I kept going. The first mile went by in 9:14 which was good, but not as fast as the last one. The second mile was on the trails and had an occasional up and down through a wash, and again I didn't feel like I was keeping up to the speed I wanted. Finally in the third mile, my legs weren't going to cooperate and I took a couple of very short walk breaks. Imagine my surprise, then, when I came around the corner to the finish line and the clock was still indicating under 30 minutes! I picked up the pace as best I could to finish.
Since there were at least several hundred people doing this race, I knew I had not crossed the start line for some time after the gun sounded. But I was even more surprised to find my watch said I had finished in 29:07! That would be 21 seconds faster than my time a couple weeks ago which was my best in 6 years. Then, when I downloaded my Garmin to the computer I found out why - the GPS says the course was only 2.98 miles, not the 3.1 it was supposed to be. So I'm taking this result with a grain of salt.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
