Taoist story retold

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Ok, I listened to this story yesterday...

A man was walking on the journey deep in thought.
Then he noticed a lion begin to chase him.
He ran, and ran, and ran....
Finally, he came to a cliff and jumped off in order to escape the lion.
Luckily, there was a mulberry bush growing on the side of the mountain.
He grabbed the bush which prevented him from falling.
However, the mulberry bush had thorns which hurt his hands.
He was going to jump the rest of the way down, but when he looked down,
There was a second lion at the bottom waiting for him.
As hung-there, he wondered about the strangeness of his position.
Then, he saw a berry on the mulberry bush and he ate it.
It was the best berry he had ever eaten.

He determined that this adventure is just like life:
The first lion is our past... Hunting us down, chasing, threatening;
The second lion is our future... Waiting for us, wanting to harm us;
The thorn bush is our present... It can sting as well as produce tremendous fruit.
The best choice is to enjoy the tremendous fruit.
