The Cake is NOT for Eating... (photos)

My Boss' birthday is tomorrow, so we are having his party tonight at work. Lucky for me, we are not getting pizza (which is the usual protocol) but we are getting Subway. I don't think I will be having any, I have my own lunch I packed. Not a really big deal to me anyway, as I would rather have my quinoa and salsa.

It has been long standing that I am in charge of the cake. Usually, I buy one from the Walmart bakery, complete with a nifty decoration in the flavor of your choice. My Boss, while he likes those cakes, prefers Cherry Chip or Carrot cake. Now, I went to every grocery store in Roaring Spring, East Freedom, Duncansville and Altoona and could not find a Cherry Chip cake mix. In fact, I am pretty sure they stopped making them. I then went to PLAN B - which is Carrot Cake with whipped cream cheese icing.

BEHOLD!!



Of course, I made the cake, but I will not be eating it. Honestly, I don't really even care. I don't feel like I am missing out on anything. I really do hope it turns out well.

We are going to a BBQ with his friends next weekend, and we are supposed to bring a covered dish. Of course, the hostess asked me promptly if I would make a cake. Of course, I agreed. I think I will make an Orange Creamsicle cake. They always seem to go over well. I will write more about that, when the time comes however.

Last night's group was pretty awesome. The RD took us "grocery shopping" at a local supermarket. We went through each department and talked about things we should buy, we should only buy on occasion and things we should avoid at all costs. Most of the stuff I already knew, but it was really nice to get out and be with like minded people who all have the same goals in mind.

On another note... I have been thinking a lot about my boyfriend, and the things he eats. I don't try to push my lifestyle off on anyone. I do however, want my boyfriend to be healthy. It is hard because I guess I enable him to be unhealthy, but then again, if I didn't prepare his food, then he would just eat stuff worse.

For example here is what he will eat today

Breakfast: 4 pancakes made from heart smart bisquick using egg whites and skim milk - w/ at least 4 tablespoons of REAL butter and maybe 1/2 cup of regular syrup.

Lunch - 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made with 2 slices of white bread, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of jelly. I know because I made these myself. With that, he will have 3 servings of wheat thin crackers. T

Dinner - 2 regular hot dogs on 2 regular white rolls w/ bbq potato chips and a klondike bar

He hates fruit - he will only eat apples, and then only if they are in pie. He doesn't really eat veggies unless they are with a meal, and then they are only limited to salad, raw carrots, green beans, corn and peas.

The good news is.. he gave up the Mt. Dew, and now drinks plain water, or Crystal Light packets.

I just want him to be healthy. I was hoping that once he saw me being successful, he would want to join in the fun.

    Stay on your own foundation. No one could tell us when was the right time to focus on eating differently. Is your boyfriend actually unhealthy? Even if he is, it's up to him, though I think I'd involve him in food prep more.

That is something that you bake but don't eat cake. However, a lot of people think I'm being so 'good" by not eating sweets on weekdays, but I don't care, really. If a dessert at work looks really good, I'll freeze a piece until the weekend. But I rarely bake. I can keep cookies and cake around, but I still overeat batter and dough. No biggie. I cook other things and buy sweets when needed. Or eat others' offerings! Wish I was going where there was Orange Creamsicle cake.

    I agree with GOTTABEDONE. I think there are little ways that you can "sneak" healthier food in if you want him to eat better. I was doing that with my boyfriend and my kids so that they were still getting some actual nutrition from their food. Even if they think it tastes a little funny the first time, they usually end up liking it just fine the second or third. Or they never notice at all.
Luckily though, my kids and bf now eat what I eat for the most part. Everyone has pretty much gotten used to it and we splurge and eat some of the old stuff every now and then, just not nearly as often as we used to.

Good for you making a cake and being able to not eat it. I don't think I could do that. But I LOVE cake. LOVE.

    you cant change others only yourself. Now that being said would he notice if you put sugar free syrup in the regular bottle? How about getting the wonder bread white bread that at least has all the nutrients of whole wheat? Try making some turkey dogs with your regular dogs and see if he will try them, or slip him one by mistake (wink wink). Sure there are a lot of things you can't change but at least you can make his unhealthy eating as healthy as possible.
