Even though my journey started over 11 years ago, I joined 5 years ago trying to find that healthy lifestyle I had lost. My journey began after I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2001. After a 14 hour surgery, I spent the next 6 months working on getting back to being able to hike our 3 mile daily trek through the mountain. July 2001 I did it. My next step was to start running again but that didn’t happen. My weight was not a problem until I started a 6 week duration of radiation. During the next 6 weeks, I had to take care of myself and not tire myself out any more than the radiation already had. The radiation really took it out of me.
Over the next year, I went from 130 to well over 160. I’m not sure what my final weight was, I quit stepping on the scale. We walked daily, but it wasn't enough. I struggled with my weight from 2002 until November 2006. This was when I had finally lost the weight I gained from surgery and radiation, I was back at 131.
I maintained my weight but with a struggle during the next several months. At times I felt like I was losing the battle and then SparkPeople came into my life. I received an e-mail through “My Points” to visit their site, which I did but didn’t join. A couple of weeks later, I went back to their site and joined. I’m so glad I did it then. I love my Class team and never would have met any of them if it wasn’t for our Class. They have been very supportive. Just a small team of a handful, Janet, Tracy, Mary, BYEPOUNDS and few others who pop in every now and again. But the support couldn’t be any stronger and the bonds we have made over the years is awesome.
During the first several months of joining, I hadn’t joined any teams yet but read everything I could and started tracking, SP taught me how to maintain my weight and start back on a healthy lifestyle. Several months later, I started joining teams, becoming active on my teams and making goals. My weight goal was to be 125 on my 40th birthday. I met that goal a couple weeks early and what a feeling that was.
I still have times when I feel like I’m struggling, I don’t think that will ever go away. Besides it keeps me on my toes and aware of my weight. I’ve been maintaining now for 4 years and have made and met several new goals, including being able to run again.
It took only a year to gain the weight and 4 years to “let it go”. I always remember how easy it is to gain and how so very hard it is to lose.
What can I say about SparkPeople that hasn't already been said? Nothing. If you are dedicated, motivated and serious about your health, this is the best site to help.
Now, what to have for my Sparkaversary dinner? How about Peppercorn Steak with Herbed Blue Cheese from the SparkPeople cookbook, a large salad with an Italian dressing I made using my Vita Mix blender I won in the SparkRecipes Un-chained recipe contest (shameless plug of my healthy Chili’s version of their Southwestern Eggrolls) & a slice of homemade crusty French bread made into garlic toast. Could it be any better?!
To my Class, Happy Sparkaversary team!! We made it another year and looking forward to many more years with you and all of my SP friends I've made.
OK, my fur-baby is letting me know it's time for her lunch so gotta go. Wishing everyone a wonderful day .
