One of the most important ingredients to success is making small changes...this mantra is repeated over and over from successful sparks members. I have tried to take this to heart, so I grabbed a pair of 3 pound hand weights and made it a goal to stand and do simple arm or leg raises for a minimum of the first 10 minutes of every tv show I find that I have time to watch. I also do 10 squats or 20 jumping jacks every time I go to the restroom, at home.
If the tv show has music, I might throw in some cardio dance moves or shadow box. My son loves to watch action cartoons, and enjoys having me in the room. These shows provide great music for a workout.
I have a cervical fusion, between levels c4, c5, c6, and c7, so I am always conscientious not to aggravate my neck or go against my doctor orders. Even with the limitations, I find that I can start to sweat within the 10 minute exercise breaks and quickly wrack up my fitness minutes. I also play in the pool with my 5 year old, since it is summer, here in Arkansas. We both enjoy this time and it doesn't feel like exercise at all. I race him from one side of the pool, to the other, and find that we both swim many laps this way.
Overall, I'm finding exercise to be the easiest part of the new life style, in spite of the health issues that initially led to my weight gain and fear of further injury. To anyone reading this, I wish you luck on your journey and hope you find the sparks you need, to make lasting and fun changes in your life.
