Wow, the Blue Herron

Saturday, June 02, 2012

And it was only 5 mins. from our house. We went over by Home Depot, and I wanted to check the man made pond that is there. Eagle Eyes actually spotted the Heron before me. I had to shoot through a chain link fence, but the pictures were actually decent. A Coot was in one of the pictures as well.

We stopped by to see the young Hawks. We were thrilled to see both of them today. The Hawk with the darker coloring was in the tree this time. The other bird was flying around.

Right after I took that picture the Hawk flew off, and joined the other one. It was fun to see them fly, and play with each other. One sad note. The last 3 times we have checked on the Raven nest near by we noticed it was empty. We don't think the birds were old enough to fly off, plus the chicks usually stay with the parents 4 to 6 months after they learn to fly. We don't even see the Adult Ravens. We think maybe an Owl robbed the nest. The other Raven nest we have been watching has better news. We are pretty sure the chicks have hatched. We thought we saw a small black head yesterday, and the Mom Raven has been sitting up higher in the nest. That nest is in a better area. So we will keep checking on that nest. Today I did get a picture of the Mom sitting in her nest.

Have a good Saturday!

We don't live far from a Wildlife Preserve along the Delaware river, and we have Heron's flying overhead quite often...One of our neighbors has a lovely Coi Pond and these birds frequently enjoy the buffet this pond has to offer. I guess they prefer Coi to the river carp! LOL!

We have one of those herons that lives in a river behind our house. I will try to get a picture of it. When it flies over me in the backyard it looks like a prehistoric bird. The way it flaps so slow. Sometimes when we walk down there we also see a white one.

We actually had a blue heron ( a smaller one) near the big lake out front of our neighborhood today! It is rare to see them...good for you! We didn't get a pic since they were too far away for a good shot and our lousy zoom lens! Funny it was by a Home Depot! Birds show up at the craziest places! Like we see more seagulls in parking lots than on the beach sometimes!! So sad about the one raven nest! emoticon

Great pictures. I hate that about the Ravens but I guess that's the cycle of life. The owls have to survive too.
