Giving up diet drinks finally

Saturday, June 02, 2012

This is by far the hardest thing I've ever done. I am trying to switch from drinking diet Coke all the time to a combination of water and tea. I've mentioned it before but this time I am really trying. I have noticed that since I've cut back on the diet drinks I crave less sugary stuff. Chocolate and ice cream are two of my biggest addictions. I haven't craved either since I cut back. Its hard for me to get used to drinking tea. I like hot tea in the winter and I can drink it with honey but I've never developed a taste for iced tea. Water alone just doesn't cut it and I've tried adding lemon or fruit, I'd rather drink it plain.
It helps with the cravings but I hope drinking normal sweetened tea doesn't make me gain weight.
On another note: I had to give up the food tracker completely. It was fun in the beginning but then I began to rebel. It was just too restrictive for me and when that happens I binge. It took me awhile to connect the two but since I've quit using it, I haven't binge ate once. I know how to eat healthy and I know portion control, I guess just having to record it was not working for me.
I need to get back on track with my exercising. Its time to start week 2 of the x-factor dvd thing. I saw immediate results the first week, but I'm a little scared to start the next week. The first time I did the wk1 workout, I was so sore I could barely walk. Now I can do it with minimal soreness. I'm pretty sure wk2 is going to hurt all over again. Its not muscle strain or anything bad, just normal hard exercise soreness. My poor treadmill has been neglected for over a week now and my bike is getting pretty dusty. I need to get my butt in gear.

I have been trying to do that too. I don't drink tea unless it's caffeine-free, but I don't really have a taste for tea too much. I still drink Diet CF Coke, but I have cut waaaay back. I rarely buy it anymore, but others buy it for me when we play cards or get together, so I drink it in moderation until it's gone. It's been hard to even cut back, so I can only imagine what it must feel like to give it up completely. Good job and Good Luck!

I too am working on kicking the Diet Coke habit. I am down to 1 a day. I found that using MIO really gives flavor to water without any additives, calories or carbs. The Sweet Tea one is great. You are doing great girl!!

Yeah, giving up diet soda was hard in the begining for me, too, but you know what? Not only did I crave less sweet things, like you, but when I broke down on vacation and "treated" myself to a skinny mohito made with rum, lime juice, mint, and diet Sprite -- it tasted REALLY BAD! I haven't wanted anothre one since then.

Also, when I have wanted something carbonated (who knows why we crave anything), instead of reaching for a diet drink I purchased plain seltzer water flavored with raspberry. It tasted fresh and clean. Lemon or lime juice is another good fizzy water add-in.

    Great plan!

I'll be interested to see how the no tracking thing works for you. I wonder if I don't do the same thing sometimes.

Also, it might help to vary the temperature of your water and see what temp you like best. I prefer to only drink water when it's ICE COLD, but I have a friend who prefers it at room temperature and a coworker who will drink hot water (with nothing added!) when it's cold outside.
