On May 26, 2012 I walked participated in a marathon for women...
Starting off at 4 am may have helped lend a sense of "dreamy" to my 20 km walk. 19 women participated in this walk with most going all the way to complete 40 km. The women were walking to raise funds for a church in our area. I walked to support my best pal who was going for the 40 km mark.
Day broke around 5 am. Our route included 7 km of dirt road. We completed most of the dirt road in the dark. I have latent fears of stray dogs which are all over Brazil. I wondered if we would have any problems. We woke up quite a few along the way!
My goal was 20 km in 4 hours. I traded off with another colleague at the 20 km mark so that our pal could have a constant companion for the whole walk. It was my primary goal to stick with my pal and see that she kept up her pace and was doing okay during the walk. Once we got a little separated, but we're mostly walking side by side
For me this was part of a dream come true. When I first joined SP several years ago I made a vision collage including a magazine cutout of a family biking together and an older couple hiking together. I still want to take a long distance bike ride with some of my family and an overnight hiking trip on a famous trail like the Appalachian. In February I completed a mountain hike with 3 colleagues and knew when this opportunity come about that I would do it.
I'm super thankful to have participated and look forward to the possibility of walking the full marathon of 40 km some day with these wonderful ladies. This time 20 km was my goal and for what I trained.
I'm glad to report that my time training was good. I felt little to no feet or leg pain during or after the walk. I have some hip problems after three oversized babies but only had one day of a little stiffness in my "bad" hip.
Can't wait til the next time!
This week I passed another life milestone - 25 years married to my college sweetheart!
