I feel like I've been gone a month! (Oh, wait a minute.)
It was a fun trip but here's what I learned about my quest for fitness and a healthy weight: I need to be in control or I'm not in control.
The first two weeks we were doing our own thing: Nashville, Indianapolis for the Half Marathon, and then moseying our way to Boston. I did really well. We always try to stay in Corps of Engineer parks or state parks so there are lots of trails and roads for walking. We only ate out one time, the crappy pizza the night of the half marathon.
The last two weeks we were visiting friends and both of our large families. Walking opportunities weren't literally outside our door so exercise became more problematic. We did OK but just OK. More opportunities to drink alcohol, which I had totally given up for 4 months. LOTS of eating out and eating meals prepared by others. There were just TOO many opportunities to be tempted! I made some great choices, some OK choices, and some roll-your-eyes-terrible choices. By the end of the visit I had totally caved.
But here's the thing: I love these people, and I don't ALWAYS want to be the one refusing the dessert when it's handed to me or acting like I'm too holy for a glass of wine. Or two. We all know moderation is the key but when every new set or subset of people think THEIR meal is your "exception" it becomes a diet nightmare!
Does that sound like an excuse? I can't tell if it is an excuse or a reason!
Regardless -- now I'm back home and it feels good to be in control of my environment. We 've loaded up on produce and it feels great to have gigantic salads for lunch and two veggies with dinner.
Today, June 1, feels like THE day to recommit myself and move forward!
My goals for June are to consistently drink 9 glasses of water a day, do at least 60 minutes of intentional exercise at least 6 days a week, and track everything I eat fearlessly and honestly! I'm going to join the Summer 5% challenge for accountability because the Spring challenge was really motivating for me.
What are YOUR goals for June? Let's put them out there and work to make them a reality!
