The Truth About Red Meat

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

A large study in the Archives of Internal Medicine confirmed previous research on the health risks of eating red meat.

The study, involving nearly 38,000 men and 84,000 women over the course of almost 30 years, concluded that red meat consumption increased the risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as cancer mortality.

This study wasn’t the first of its kind; there have been many studies throughout the years on the ill effects of red meat in our diets. All of them related to chronic disease risk, but few of them, if any at all, looked at the ill effects that meat can have on outer beauty.

Let’s first start with the basics—that is, red meat lacks some of the best beauty boosters around. Vitamins A and C are absent in red meat, and fruits and vegetables in general may be lacking in a diet where red meat rules. For example, the study that just came out showed that a higher red meat intake was associated with a higher amount of overall calories and lower amounts of whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Red meat has also been associated with increased incidence of inflammation. One study found that saturated fatty acids were positively associated with inflammation, which is just about the worst thing you can have when it comes to your overall health and beauty.

If you draw down your red meat intake, you’ll lower your risk for hypertension, as well as for certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Your intake of fruits and vegetables will most likely go up, which means you’ll get more beauty-boosting vitamins and minerals such as biotin, selenium and vitamin C, helping to improve everything from wrinkle reduction to strong, healthy nails.

You may also end up having more nuts and beans, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Those omega 3’s not only zap inflammation in the body but, can lead to more healthy skin and shiny, lustrous hair.

Absolutely. I usually only eat red meat 1 time 1 meal only the day after my cycle because of an iron deficiency. I love my life without red meat!

Already gave it up. I've been vegan for almost 1.5 years, and feel fantastic. I felt better immediately - best of all, my early onset arthritis went away IMMEDIATELY, and took me off the fast track to spinal disk surgery (at age 28)!

We have almost quit completely. When my dad died of colon cancer 2 years ago at the age of 59, we started reading about the possible causes. Read meat and dairy were listed as two of the highest causes, and these were very much a part of dad's lifestyle. We only have red meat 2 or less times per month. I can't say I miss it either. We buy turkey burgers, fish, pork, beans, and other sources of protein.

One more fact about red meat. It isn't bled when slaughtered like it used to be. When consuming red meat people are eating blood when they should not be! Too much iron can lead to hemochromotosis -- which can cause all those diseases you describe! If the blood is removed - before or after slaughter, the meat is healthy for us.

While I still eat red meat when I can get it, it is so expensive that it is very, very rare in my diet now. Maybe living more on cans of tuna and a rice cake is better for more than my very tiny budget.

I am working on it! I was raised on red meats and potatoes and I have been focusing on eating other meats and fruits and veggies. Great blog! Thanks for the insite!

Since I have been on this journey there are months I do not touch red meat or very occasionally. We eat lots of chicken, fish and ground turkey. After a while you don't miss it. emoticon
