It's nice when your family supports your effort to create a circus in your backyard, even nicer when they encourage it. Logan and Audrey gave me LED poi for Mother's Day. Poi are weights on tethers, that you swing around. The art form came from the Maori people in the New Zealand area. Have you ever seen those dudes at luaus, spinning fire with the nunchuk looking things? That's poi. You'll be happy to know that Randy didn't authorize fire poi, only LED and tailed poi (they look like wind socks).
Spinning these things is a lot of fun. I'm a little bruised, pains of being a beginner, but it's fun practicing. You may be wondering, "What's the point?" Fun. And anything that keeps me moving and learning is a plus in my book. SparkPeople encourages me to try lots of new things and I think that's great. When I first started hooping in earnest, I joined an online hoop community and filled out a form with check boxes with categories like fire eating and flow wands. I remember thinking, "Who ARE these people? Fire eating?!" I shakily checked one box--hoop. This morning, I joined an online poi community and filled out a similar form. This time, I was able to check FOUR boxes. Woo to the Circus Hoo. We also discovered Randy's hidden talent--he can yo-yo. Who knew? Now we just need to find an act for Logan. Maybe elephant trainer? We could make little elephant costumes for Chubbs and Pudding... Bring on the Big Top; we'll be ready to take this show on the road soon!
In other news: Audrey and I walked a 5K weekend before last and had a blast. The walk benefitted research for Juvenile Diabetes. We walked with friends, in support of their son who was diagnosed a while back. The course wound through King's Island (a local amusement park). It was fun walking behind the scenes and through the animatronic dinosaur exhibit. We were able to keep a brisk pace and still had energy afterwards. I admit to taking a nap later in the day, though. I'm not used to getting up at five in the morning! And we just got back from a holiday weekend of GLAMping (camping in a cabin with AC and wi-fi). Itís been a fun start to the summer.
Audrey and Snoopy at the beginning of the walk
Audrey had the brilliant idea of tie-dying our shirts, so we could keep track of each other.
I need a sign like this at my house.
