Mother's Day Poi Joins the Backyard Circus

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

It's nice when your family supports your effort to create a circus in your backyard, even nicer when they encourage it. Logan and Audrey gave me LED poi for Mother's Day. Poi are weights on tethers, that you swing around. The art form came from the Maori people in the New Zealand area. Have you ever seen those dudes at luaus, spinning fire with the nunchuk looking things? That's poi. You'll be happy to know that Randy didn't authorize fire poi, only LED and tailed poi (they look like wind socks).

Spinning these things is a lot of fun. I'm a little bruised, pains of being a beginner, but it's fun practicing. You may be wondering, "What's the point?" Fun. And anything that keeps me moving and learning is a plus in my book. SparkPeople encourages me to try lots of new things and I think that's great. When I first started hooping in earnest, I joined an online hoop community and filled out a form with check boxes with categories like fire eating and flow wands. I remember thinking, "Who ARE these people? Fire eating?!" I shakily checked one box--hoop. This morning, I joined an online poi community and filled out a similar form. This time, I was able to check FOUR boxes. Woo to the Circus Hoo. We also discovered Randy's hidden talent--he can yo-yo. Who knew? Now we just need to find an act for Logan. Maybe elephant trainer? We could make little elephant costumes for Chubbs and Pudding... Bring on the Big Top; we'll be ready to take this show on the road soon!

In other news: Audrey and I walked a 5K weekend before last and had a blast. The walk benefitted research for Juvenile Diabetes. We walked with friends, in support of their son who was diagnosed a while back. The course wound through King's Island (a local amusement park). It was fun walking behind the scenes and through the animatronic dinosaur exhibit. We were able to keep a brisk pace and still had energy afterwards. I admit to taking a nap later in the day, though. I'm not used to getting up at five in the morning! And we just got back from a holiday weekend of GLAMping (camping in a cabin with AC and wi-fi). Itís been a fun start to the summer.

Audrey and Snoopy at the beginning of the walk

Audrey had the brilliant idea of tie-dying our shirts, so we could keep track of each other.

I need a sign like this at my house.

Very cool. I have a friend who went to India. She does do the fire dancing. I don't know if they are quite the same as poi since they are Indian, but they are very similar. I'm for the LED balls. They look really cool, and a lot safer. It was a lot of fun with the light up hoop too.

That is AWESOME!!!! I love the music as well! Do you have a playlist at all? It is awesome "get up and go" music. My 5-year-old son and I love to dance. I always have no matter what my size :) I want to again and I find that type of music makes me get up and move!!!

This is so much fun! I've secretly wanted to learn poi for a couple years now but have been afraid. you look great for someone who is just learning! how did you learn? Should I find a class or something? And what are these online poi communities? Keep spinning, it looks wonderful and I hope some day I can post a similar video :)

Here in Hawaii, many of the Hula Halau (dance troop/school) also teach other Polynesian dances, so I had several friends who learned traditional Maori style Poi dancing. I would ask them to show me how to do the Poi balls, and made many homemade poi out of newspaper, yarn, and plastic bags. I was never fortunate enough to take Hula myself, but thanks to my friends, I had a blast, and I actually managed many of the moves they could. As with most things, Patience, Practice, and Persistence, so keep having a blast and keep plenty of ice on hand. emoticon

Nice video, the poi spinning looked really good there. I have been whacked by my poi many times, you develop an appreciation for ducking when they start to go off track... lol.

I love poi, would love to get the light up, tailed poi, mine are simply tennis balls covered in leather, with feathers on the bottom, with clips for glow sticks to be attached for night time. Fire poi is really awesome to watch, some day I will try them out... but they are very heavy to spin, not sure how that would go for my weight lift restriction...

I LOVE it!! Most definitely... hoops and poi are not for the faint of heart!!!

I said "OUCH" for you both when you took a hit! Hopefully it doesn't hurt as much as it sounds like it does! You really had that spinning F A S T!!! That must be an amazing arm workout! emoticon emoticon

You did a super cool job of lighting up the night! It did remind me of a light brite.

I hope Gunner didn't take any hits.... he is just part of the circus... not intimidated by things swinging and flying through the air at high speeds!

Very COOL idea to tie dye your shirts. I had thought they came from the race like that.. didn't realize you had done it.

My favorite dynamic duo has done it again! Thanks for sharing the *F*U*N*!!!!!

I can't wait until fire is authorized. I know it will happen!!! Maybe hoops are safer than poi with those head hits though.
