kayaking = AWESOME!

Sunday, May 27, 2012

I had never been kayaking before, so my interest was piqued when a good friend posted on Facebook Friday that she had gotten a second lightweight kayak, and did anyone want to come with? When I saw her at church this morning I asked if anyone had taken her up on the offer, and when she said no, I snapped up the opportunity!

We made plans for me to arrive at her place at 2:30. When I got there her husband had already loaded the kayaks on their SUV. We quickly gathered the remaining supplies needed, and were off.

How's this for awesome - we only had to drive about 100 yards to get to the gravel road that led to the creek. She later told me this was one of the major selling points when they bought their lot. Down the gravel road, and in no time we were at the creek. Her husband got the kayaks in the water and helped us in. Then - we were off!

Being my first time I was a tad wobbly, but caught on fairly quickly. I hadn't been paddling long when it occurred to me - the upper body ST workout I did on Saturday must have been pretty stellar. My arms felt like noodles! But I kept on paddling. The scenery was gorgeous. We were the only ones on that part of the creek except for some jet skiers that crossed our path for a brief time. They were nice & slowed way down to pass us, thankfully. Before I knew it we were at the York River - time to turn around & go back.

The return trip was much easier as the wind was at our backs and the tide was still coming in. Around a bend, and another, and another, and in no time we were back at the landing. I told Karen any time she needed a buddy to go kayaking - I'm her gal! She tries to go at least several times a month. I think we will have a fairly regular date!

Got back home and I was already sweaty and stinky, so I decided to start mowing the lawn. Mowed for about an hour before I just gave out. Came in and took a shower...and am I whooped! I guess an hour of kayaking and an hour of mowing will do that to ya, huh?

All in all, an excellent day. And tomorrow is another day off. Wonder what adventures I can find then?

    Great! I want to try this!

    My aunt and uncle in West Point have a couple of kayaks. I've never been out, though. A couple of years ago, my cousin and husband went out on the Mattaponi - she fell out and couldn't get back in the kayak. DH had to tow her and her kayak back in. I don't think she got far before she fell out, but the current took them quite a ways downriver. DH got a real workout!

    I'm glad you enjoyed the kayaking! My husband and I bought kayaks last summer to use on our lake. It's a great upper body workout. I love just scooting along the shoreline and looking at all the wildlife. We don't have a way to transport them yet, but there are a lot of rivers/streams that can be kayaked around where we live.

    It's a wonderful thing to be out on a kayak!

    Dan's really serious about buying a kayak- I hope he follows through. They started to rent them at the boat dock during the summer for $15, so my friend and I are going- just for fun. We take it out on the Lake, which is REALLY cool! One upside of having a lake!

    I have never been kayaking. I always wondered if I would like it since I liked using a rowboat years ago.
    That sounds like so much fun! I am glad you had the opportunity to go. emoticon
