Barbecued Ribs Challenge--Sat./Sun. May 26-27, 2012

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Our neighbors have a great party every year on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. It's their own private Rib Fest, complete with judges and trophies. We have never won because we prefer a slow-cooked rib with a vinegar-tomato sauce, and this crowd of friends and family compete to out-heat each other. But the food is good, there's plenty of beer and wine and a huge crowd.

How, as a Sparker, should I handle this party? It's the one time a year I eat pork ribs, so I don't feel too bad about a bit of indulgence, but even the sides are everyone's champion creamy picnic side dishes--beans, cole slaw, pasta salads, etc. It's fat city.

I'll make sure I get my exercise in, I'll eat a healthy breakfast and I will go through the line only once. It will still be a day's worth of calories in one sitting. Do I just move on and do better on Monday?

Usually in rib cookoffs, they are two categories, one for dry rubs, one for wet ones which your ribs would fall into it.

I am the one who tends to not eat any salad that is creamy especially when the weather gets really hot and they can spoil easily My favorite coleslaw is very easy, a bag of cole slaw mix and some oil free italian salad dressing. Makes it tangy and less fat.

Drink lots of water, take a small taste of everything and you should survive this well

My husband cooks ribs regularly and I enjoy them. I make a point of loading up on veggies and drink a lot of water, so there's only so much room for the fat stuff. There's nothing wrong with small tastes.

I also make a point of moving that much more, either by working out or simply keeping busy.

Enjoy the party!!
