My last class of the day (my behavior challenged class) is in charge of putting up our "Under the Sea" mural (pictures next week, when we're finished - I promise).
So I demonstrated, we had guided practice, then independent practice (as in, I showed them what to do, helped them do it, then let them work with minimal supervision).
We finished almost half today - 5 panels up, and most of that area with the borders on. Looks great!
After the class was excused and the items cleaned up, I went outside to see how things looked - and one of my students from the first half of the year wandered by, late to leave. (This girl is about 15 yrs old and repeating 8th grade - sweet, nice, but not academic - nor artistic. But a nice kid.) She looked and said, "Oh Ms. Schwartz, that looks so nice, who did this?" So I told her that it was the sea creatures everyone had made, and I did the background areas.
She looked a little more closely, and screamed, "Oh LOOK!!!! That's MY FISH!!!!!" (Pointing to a big pink fish) "OH, I feel so SPECIAL!!!!!!!!"
And she went skipping off to the bus.
