Listening to my body

Thursday, May 24, 2012

This week has been very enlightening on my weight loss journey! And of all places, I got the best "food for thought" of the week at church on Sunday. Pastor T was talking about getting unstuck in our fitness. He said that God provided us with an alarm of sorts to let us know when we need to eat something. But that most of the time we don't wait for the alarm. The alarm is when our stomach starts to growl to let us know when we are hungry... when we NEED to eat. I started thinking about it... I couldn't remember the last time my stomach had actually growled. Come to think of it... on the flip side, I also couldn't remember the last time my stomach had not felt overly full... EGAD!!! So, it has been way too long since I have listened to my stomach tell me when and how much of something to eat. NO WONDER I AM NOT LOSING WEIGHT!!!

Then he went on to say that one way he had controlled what he was eating when he was trying to lose weight was whenever he reached for something to eat he would ask himself if it was going to glorify God if he ate it. "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God's glory." ~1Corinthians 10:31 wow. I mean, wow!

So this week I have been asking God to help me to only eat what will bring glory to Him. That doesn't mean I haven't eaten "forbidden" foods. But I did chose to eat a sliver of cake one day instead of a huge piece. And I have actually heard my stomach growl once... it took till today, but I heard it. And, I have actually listened to my body and stopped eating when I don't feel hungry anymore (instead of eating until I am over stuffed and uncomfortable). Baby steps, but at least they are steps in the right direction.

Well, I have eaten better since Sunday. I started logging my food again, today. I am drinking plenty of water. And I am going to ease into exercise. Lord help me to honor you by what, when, and how much I eat!

What's that you say, body? Thank you? You are welcome. And I am very sorry for the way I have treated you in the past. I promise to listen more closely to you from now on. And thank you for not giving up on me!
