My morning 'splurge' today... hint: yummy!

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

OK. I admit it. I have this "thing" for TAHINI. emoticon

You know what tahini is?

Sesame tahini. A creamy sauce - or some call it "paste" - made from ground-up sesame seeds. It can be used in place of peanut butter, for example. Or to help make an incredible salad dressing.

You can get tahini either RAW or TOASTED. I like mine raw.....

But-- tahini is both ENERGY-RICH AND pretty expensive (in the USA, anyway)... It's not something I eat every day or every week. More like every now and then.

I've loved tahini ever since I discovered it in the health food store back in the 1970s. Yes, I'm that old! emoticon

Thank goodness, sesame tahini is GOOD for you. But it's also packed with calories!

NOTE TO YOU LADIES: It's also a really good vegetarian/vegan source of CALCIUM, for those bones, teeth, etc.

I figure if I'm gonna have a nutritional splurge every now and then, better I do it in the MORNING, when I have the whole day and evening to process/make use of the energy. So this morning I had a WHOLE WHEAT "sandwich thin" (i.e., piece of bread) with my tahini drizzled on it.

So, doing this the right way, today's delicious taste of tahini is included in my daily food plan. It was worth it! In my book, the best splurges "hit the spot" - which this one did. Yummy!

YOU ALL ARE FABULOUS! Thanks for hollering back! Great info.

Tahini's another EXCELLENT, easy, healthy food - even a snack - to put into our mix.

Can't let our menus get b-o-r-i-n-g, huh?!? emoticon

I have heard of tahini, and even tried it in the past, but never really considered buying it. You've changed my mind no that. I'm adding it to the list for the grocery store today!

I really enjoyed your 'ode to tahini'

Kravmagirl - put some on toast instead of butter. Make tahini goddess dressing. Mix with lemon juice, yogurt and mint for a really good sauce for falafel or veggies.

Have you ever made your own tahini? I posted a recipe on SparkRecipes long ago. it's really easy to make if you have a food processor.

I keep staring at my jar of tahini wondering what to do with it... I used to make hummus with it but I haven't in a while. I will have to try making a sandwich with it!! Sounds delicious!

I'll have to revisit tahini; I did buy a jar from Trader Joe's, but it is just sitting in the fridge LOL
