Math!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

I like to do new things. I really do! (Yes I am trying to convince myself of this) ;P
Sadly though, some things I would like to do are the same things I have avoided like the plague most of my life. My life is kind of like a car ride, I can either take the wheel and steer myself into new things, learning new things along the way (even if they are out of my "comfort zone"or I can sit in the back seat and watch other people do the things I would like to know how to do.

Learning to eat right, exercise, relax, and most recently HOW TO JOG are some things I am doing now and getting pretty good at them--even though I always thought I could NEVER do those things. I have always wanted to learn to speak another language and have dreamed of being able to do math. So I am going to! My children are home schooled and math is my hubby's area--not mine. But I have made up my mind to do it and have spent the morning learning some basic stuff I never knew how to do (it is kind of embarrassing but I never learned math in school, even though I kept up my 3.2 average in school and college--I skipped math at all costs (also physical education lol...)

I made a promise to myself to learn algebra and I am going to. (It might take a while though heh heh...)

I admit that after my secondary education, my own math skills have severely declined. And you know what's strange? I'm a scientist and yet I was never forced to take statistics in college or grad school. You would think that'd be a requirement. I find I struggle with stats now because of that.

I do remember that Barbie doll! I was only a kid at the time when it came out and I remember being p*ssed off about it. I was 12 years old and already knew that as a girl, I'd be fighting an uphill battle in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields.

So good for you! I'm also a big ol' nerd but I actually REALLY liked algebra. Like A LOT, as in "Algebra is fun!"

I took Refresher Math in high school so I could get through the algebra part of the math SAT. Most of my other high school courses were in what would be considered advanced placement courses in today's high school world but I caught the "fear of math bug" early in my school years!

I can appreciate your driving versus being a passenger watching others comparison. My best wishes as you practice all of your new skills.

Do you remember when Mattel made a Barbie that was programmed to say, "Math is hard!"? Boneheads. I think it's great you are going to learn Algebra. I hated it when my kids needed help with math homework and I couldn't recall anything useful (and I took Calculus -- guess brain rot took hold!). emoticon

Learning to do new things, jogging and languages.... let's see...

I could more easily learn pig-latin, in Finnish, in reverse... then I could learn to jog!

Good for you to try new things. Watch out though - you may find you like something. Certainly not jogging - but something. Maybe Algebra?!
